WWI RussianRev

Rise ofDictators WWII Cold War

What international peace keeping

organization was created after WWI?

League of Nations

The Treaty of Versailles set severe restrictions on this country. They were

not invited to the Paris Peace Conference.

Germany

He was the President of the United States who proposed the idea for the League of Nations.

President Woodrow Wilson

What was the name of the series of ideas

Woodrow Wilson brought to present at

the Treaty of Versailles?

Fourteen Points

Name three decisions that came out of the Treaty of Versailles.

Limiting the size of Germany’s army and their army related industries.

2. Returning any land Germany took over.

3. Germany was blamed entirely for the war.

4. Germany would have to pay war reparation to the Allies.

Who was the leader of the Bolshevik

(communist) party in Russia?

Vladimir Lenin

Define communism.

Communism is when the government has complete control of the economy. There is no private ownership. All business, property, and economic matters are regulated by the government with the goal of promoting equality.

Define Soviets.

Soviets were local groups of workers, soldiers, farmers, and peasants who began ruling their cities and towns in place of the Provisional Government.

The Soviets played a big role in assisting Lenin in his return to Russia and organizing the Bolsheviks to lead

a revolution.

Who were the Bolsheviks?

Group of revolutionary Russian Marxists who took

control of Russia’s government in November

1917 (Bolshevik Revolution).

After the death of Vladimir Lenin this leader came to power. Identify this leader

and describe life in the USSR under his leadership

(provide at least two pieces of information).

Joseph Stalin-Totalitarian Leader-Implemented a command economy & established “Five Year Plans” for the devp’t of the USSR’s economy.-Established collective farms.-Used censorship, propaganda, and secret police to keep the people in line.

He was the Nazi leader who came to power in

Germany in 1933.

Adolf Hitler

What is totalitarianism?

A totalitarian government may have more than one leader. A totalitarian government controls every aspect of public and private life. A totalitarian

government is most commonly associated with communism, because of the level of

control this gives the government. A totalitarian government also uses fear

tactics as well as censorship and propaganda to keep the people in line.

This leader’s successful fascist movement took power in this

country in 1922.What is the name of the

leader and what country did he take power in?

Benito Mussolini

Italy

What are the characteristics of a

fascist government?

A fascist government has one leader. This leader demands complete and total loyalty to himself and the state. This type of system

usually elevates the wealthy and members of the military or state government. Often times fascist governments sponsor state run

industry/businesses, but not for the goal of equality (like in communism). Being disloyal to the leader means you are disloyal to the state. This type of leader often uses fear tactics to keep people

in line.

Give three reasons people supported fascist regimes in

Europe in the inter-war years (1919 –

1939).

1. After WWI many countries lacked strong leadership (weak monarch in Italy and weak coalition gov’t in Germany) – people wanted strong leaders.2. Economic problems such as inflation and depression (both Germany and Italy).3. The strong emphasis on state and loyalty was appealing to countries that did not accomplish as much as they hoped in WWI (land gains for Italy, loss of war and war guilty for Germany).4. Use of fascist fear tactics, secret police, censorship & propaganda.

Which two countries signed a

non-aggression pact before the start of

the war?

Germany and the Soviet

Union.

He was the leader of Britain during World War

II and encouraged the people to remain strong

during the Battle of Britain.

Winston Churchill

Name the three main countries in the Axis Powers.

GermanyItaly

Japan

Name the five main countries in

the Allies.

USAFranceBritain

Soviet UnionChina

Name three outcomes of World War II.

1. Germany was divided into zones by the Allied countries.2. The United Nations was formed.3. US emerged as a world super power (and the Soviet Union).4. Germany and Japan were de-militarized.5. Competition between the US and the USSR to create atomic weapons began.6. Europe and Japan went to periods of Allied occupation and rebuilding.

This is the metaphorical divide between communist

eastern Europe and non-communist western Europe. It was first used in a speech

by Winston Churchill.

Iron Curtain

Define containment.

Containment was America’s policy during the Cold War to try and stop the spread of communism and the influence of the Soviet Union throughout Europe and the world. The Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan were put in place to work towards this goal.

Define domino theory.

Domino theory is the belief that if one country in a region becomes communist that the surrounding

countries will fall to communism as well. This is the justification America

used for becoming involved in Vietnam.

What happened during the Great Leap Forward?

During the Great Leap Forward Mao Zedong tried to move China towards more efficient (communist) farming

techniques by introducing communes/collective farms. These

ended up being unsuccessful, resulting in massive crop failure and

country wide starvation.

Why did the Cuban Missile Crisis happen?

After the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion attempt, Fidel Castro allowed Nikita Khrushchev to set-up nuclear missile sites in Cuba. Khrushchev wanted to set-up these sites in Cuba in response to the USA’s missile sites in Turkey. When President Kennedy found out

about the missiles in Cuba he demanded they be removed. Khrushchev in turn demanded that the

missiles in Turkey be removed. This led to very tense negotiations between the US and the USSR that

eventually resulted in the removal of missiles from both locations.

WAGER!

You may wager up to as many points as your team currently has. You will have 5 minutes to respond to this question. Your answer will

be submitted in writing.

Is the Treaty of Versailles to be blamed for World

War II? Why or why not?

Give at least three (3) reasons to support your

answer.
