Viewed from afar, San Francisco Bay is asparkling natural treasure. Get up close and you’ll see how Save
The Bay’s daily efforts all around the shorelineare making the Bay healthy and vibrant.
Each year, tens of thousands of peoplework with Save The Bay to protect the Bayfrom today’s greatest threats—urban sprawland pollution—and to restore Bay wetlandsnow for future generations.
In our 44th year, we’re doing a better jobthan ever engaging people to Discover TheBay and take action to improve it. We knowthe Bay is its own best recruiter, and SaveThe Bay’s fun, inspiring adventures on thewater create lasting connections with peopleof all ages and backgrounds.
We won a new state law to ensure Healthy Bay Beaches, requiring water quality monitoring to protect public health for swimmers, divers and windsurfers—theGovernor’s office called our campaign “tenacious” after his office was flooded withletters and emails. Two years of communityorganizing along the Mountain View shoreline is building pressure on the U.S.Navy to clean up its toxic Superfund site atMoffett Field.
Save The Bay’s action center (visit us atwww.saveSFbay.org) makes advocacy simplefor everyone. Along with modern electronictools, Save The Bay also uses old-fashioned
manual labor to improve the Bay. Since2001, more than 20,000 Bay Area residentscontributed more than 70,000 hours restoringshoreline sites. They’ve removed more than100,000 pounds of trash and recyclables and40,000 pounds of non-native plants, andplanted 70,000 native plants. Record numbersof Bay Area businesses are joining in throughemployee volunteer teams, giving back to the Bay to improve our economy and qualityof life.
Educating the next generation of Baystewards, our award-winning Canoes InSloughs program has now taught the scienceof San Francisco Bay to more than 30,000middle- and high-school students, right onthe water.
You are vital to Save The Bay’s success. With your help in 2005, we’ll accomplisheven more. I invite you to continue helpingus celebrate, protect and restore the Bay inthe coming year, and to enlist new friends andneighbors. As you know, there are so manyrewarding and fun ways to get involved.
Please enjoy this report on our successfulwork together in 2004, and accept my thanksfor your participation and support that is saving our magnificent San Francisco Bay!

Discover The Bay
Our fun, inspiring adventures connect thousands ofpeople to the Bay’s hidden gems, abundant wildlife,
and rich cultural history. Canoe, kayak and sailboatoutings and shoreline hikes also introduce participantsto threats to the Bay’s health, ways to reduce pollution, and opportunities to restore critical wetlands. Lastyear, this program provided a rich introduction to the Bay for 1,000 residents.
Canoes In Sloughs
Opening young minds to the natural world in their backyards, Save The Bay’s hands-on science education
program reached more than 4,000 middle and highschool students and teachers last year. Paddling throughlocal marshes with Save The Bay naturalists teaches Bayecology and imparts respect for nature. Best of all, manystudents return to replant and restore the shoreline, becoming another generation of Bay stewards.

Securing the Legacy
Forty years ago, Save The Bay membershelped to create and launch the Bay
Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) to prevent unchecked landfill from narrowing our Bayto a river, and to open up public access to the shoreline. When developersand polluters tried this year to drastically reduce BCDC’s effectiveness, SaveThe Bay fought back—and won. Now an improved state law will help deterviolations of hard-won BCDC permits protecting the Bay from destruction.Public access, totaling just six miles in 1961, now includes more than 250miles of Bay Trail, shoreline parks and recreational facilities for all to enjoy.

Businesses Give Back
Hundreds of employees from PG&E, Intel, Oracle and other BayArea businesses are helping restore wetland habitat by volunteering
at Save The Bay’s shoreline sites, recognizing that a healthy Bay is central to our economy and quality of life. Working by hand, they’vehelped remove tons of invasive weeds and trash, prepared planting
areas, and sownseedlings to enhancehundreds of acres forendangered wildlife.“We’re thrilled to begiving something backto improve the qualityof life for everyonearound the Bay,” saysLarry Goldzband ofPG&E.
People Restore the Bay
Save The Bay now operates native plantnurseries in Oakland and Palo Alto
where last year, our volunteers grew 18,000wetland plants from locally collected seeds. In 2003–04, our volunteers contributedmore than 15,000 hours of service to habitatrestoration around the Bay—includingareas accessible only by canoe or kayak.
RestoreRestore!
Restoring Bair Island
Until the 1940s, the area known as Bair Island consisted of several thousand unspoiled acres of marsh, tidal sloughs, and mudflats. Leslie Salt
Company created huge salt-making evaporation ponds on the island, thenabandoned them in 1965. Restoration of these ponds on Bair Island willreturn 1,400 acres to tidal marsh—and provide habitat for the endangeredCalifornia clapper rail and salt marsh harvest mouse. Save The Bay volunteersare helping jump-start Bair Island restoration by removing non-native plantsand collecting native plant seeds for propagation.
Keep It Clean!
Save The Bay launched a grassroots campaign to force
the U.S. Navy to conduct a fullcleanup of its toxic Superfund site in the Moffett wetlands inMountain View. We forced NASA,the current Moffett Field tenant, toadopt tidal marsh restoration as the site goal for the Navy’s cleanup. Hundreds of South Bay citizensand other concerned neighbors are working to ensure thatmilitary pollution does not poison wildlife in their backyards.
Healthy BayBeaches
In 2004, our tenaciousadvocacy secured a
new state law to require uniform, consistent monitoring for harmful bacteria at sites where thousands of residents access the Bay. The law willhelp assure safe, healthy recreation and identify sources of dangerous pollution so they can be eliminated. We’re working throughout the region to protect the Bay’s water quality, fish and wildlifefrom urban and agricultural runoff pollution.

S a v e T h e B a y is the oldest and largest membership organization
working to celebrate, protect and restore the Bay. We wage effective advocacy
campaigns, restore precious wetlands, and create recreation and
education opportunities for the entire community.
San Francisco Bay supports an abundant web of life
of more than 500 species, including the California
brown pelican, peregrine falcon, herons, harbor seals,
striped bass, surf perch, sturgeon, starry flounder, and
leopard sharks. Even though one-third of the Bay has been
filled, and urban sprawl and pollution have destroyed more
than 90 percent of Bay habitat, our Bay still contains some
of the most significant remaining wetlands on the Pacific
Coast, which are used by half a million shorebirds, ducks
and geese traveling the Pacific Flyway.
