MESSAGE
Warmest greetings to all the participants of this year’s National Science and Technology Week!
I commend the Department of Science and Technology for organizing events like these that celebrate some of our country’s greatest achievements in science, engineering, and mathematics, among other fields.
A lot of us choose to work in the science and technology field to study about how everyday things work. Our job is to hypothesize, experiment, analyze, and answer questions which, at times, lead to more questions.
But, at its truest form, science can improve lives. We seek to understand how everyday things work so we can create solutions to make the world better. We can use science to overcome challenges like pollution, natural disasters, and poverty. We can use science to build a stronger nation.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology, I am truly proud to see all the work that you have accomplished in your respective fields.
Let us work together to continuously answer questions that contribute to helping our countrymen.
In the spirit of building the nation,
PAOLO BENIGNO “BAM” AQUINO IVChair, Committee on Science and Technology

MESSAGE
I congratulate the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) along with the rest of the Philippine Science Community upon the staging and observance of this year’s National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) on July 11-15, 2017 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.
Carrying this year’s theme: “Science for the People”, I am elated to know that the DOST is making a conscious effort in bringing science and technology and its technological innovations, expertise and capabilities closer to the community along with its many benefits.
I myself am witness to this advocacy during the launching of the DOST-Science and Technology Information Institute’s (STII) Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Stations or STARBOOKS and the RxBox, a telehealth system designed to provide better access to life-saving health care services in isolated and disadvantaged communities nationwide. Launched last May in Ubay National Science High School in the 2nd District of Bohol, the two programs are some of DOST’s steps in making science and technology information readily available and accessible to our citizens.
The NSTW 2017, along with its many activities and projects, will offer a lot of opportunities for entrepreneurs to expand businesses and contribute positively to the lives of the people and the community.
I commend the DOST family in its unwavering determination to provide assistance to our people through science and technology programs, projects and technological interventions. I wish the DOST a successful National Science and Technology Week and other future endeavors.
Again, congratulations and Mabuhay!

FORTUNATO T. DE LA PEÑASecretary, DOST
On behalf of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), I am honored to invite you to join and celebrate with us the achievements and significant work-in-process of Filipino scientists and innovators at the 2017 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).
Here, the DOST will be at the forefront again in showcasing the latest and most innovative products, know-how, and services, developed and funded by Filipinos in service to society.
Bannered by the theme "Science For The People," the NSTW provides an opportunity for researchers, scientists and innovators from the academe, government, and the private sector to interact with industry representatives, entrepreneurs, practicing professionals, educators, other government workers, students and interested individuals, and arm them with in-depth knowledge on how science and technology can have practical uses in their respective areas.
More importantly, this major event signifies the science and technology community’s strong resolve to contribute and make a major impact to support the development priorities of our Government led by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
See you at the World Trade Center this 11-15 July 2017.

8 Souvenir Program || 2017 NSTW
I am pleased to welcome you to the 2017 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).
Once again, the Philippine's science communities, together with the Department of Science and Technology, have come together to celebrate the hard work and creativity of Filipino scientists, researchers, engineers, innovators, and entrepreneurs in developing new products and services for the benefit of society. In keeping with the theme “Science For The People,” the NSTW provides an opportunity for the public to understand and experience firsthand how S&T can contribute in generating employment and livelihood opportunities especially in the countryside, as well as in saving lives from the destructive effects of natural hazards and ensuring food security for all.
Through our interactive exhibits, science and technology forums, career talks, and product demonstrations, we hope NSTW 2017 will open the eyes of our kababayans to the outstanding outputs of Philippine S&T in bridging world-class and life-changing applications to its target beneficiaries.
I invite everyone not only to the nationwide celebration this July, but also to the regional S&T fairs scheduled throughout the year. Join us in witnessing and honoring the excellence of our Filipino scientists and engineers at the 2017 National Science Technology Week.
CAROL M. YOROBEUndersecretary for S&T Services and
Chair, 2017 NSTW Steering Committee

NSTW Facts• The NSTW highlights the significant contributions of
science and technology to national development and has become a platform for heralding S&T advocacy in the country.
• In the 1950s, the National Science Development Board (forerunner of DOST) spearheaded the Philippine National Science Week celebration on the third week of November. It became a backdrop for conferring recognition and appreciation to outstanding scientists, researchers, inventors, and institutions.
• The NSTW was institutionalized in 1982 through Proclamation No. 2214 signed by Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, which designated the second week of July each year for its observance.
• The Science and Technology Master Plan (STMP) was launched by the Aquino administration during the 32nd NSTW celebration in 1990 to establish the desired direction of S&T development in the country. The S&T Fair was included in the line-up of important activities of the NSTW during the same year. It became the banner activity throughout the 1990s.
• In 1993, the NSTW celebration was moved to the third week of July through Proclamation No. 169 under the Ramos administration.
• Other important activities of the NSTW include the various awards for basic and applied research, technology transfer, technology commercialization and S&T promotion; scientific meetings, technical and investment forums, technology demonstrations, and technical tours.
