thrivingFillmoreDistrict.In1960theyfoundedMarcusBookswhichquicklybecameahubofculturalandpoliticalactivityandanationallyacclaimedresourceofliterature“ByandAboutBlackPeopleEverywhere.”In1976RayeandJulianopenedasecondbookstoreintheEastBay,whichisnowlocatedinOakland.In2008,MarcusBooksStorescelebratedtheir48thanniversary.
Dr.Richardson’spoliticalactivism,brilliantintellect,andcommittedleadershipmadeheramuchsoughtafterspeakeratuniversitiesandconferencesthroughouttheUnitedStates.IntheBayArea,shehastaughtatGoldenGateUniversity,USFLawSchool,UCBerkeleyCenterforUrbanBlackStudies,andtheGraduatetheologicalUnion.SheisformerChairofBlackStudies—nowAfricanaStudies—intheCollegeofEthnicStudiesatSanFranciscoStateUniversity.Dr.RichardsonretiredasthefirstProfessorEmeritusoftheSchoolofEthnicStudies,hertenureservingasasymbolofthe“comingofage”ofBlackStudiesasaseriousandrespecteddiscipline.DuringhertenureatSFSUshewrote,produced,anddirectedMontageofaDreamDeferred,basedonaLangstonHughes’poem.ShealsowroteanddirectedRequiemforMalcolm.
