For my media project these 3 techniques needed to be explained on my blog.

Transcript of 180,shot,match

Editing techniques:Shot, reverse shot. Match on action. 180⁰ rule

180⁰ rule

THE AXIS: this is an imaginary line which connects the 2 characters, and is the line you shouldn’t cross when filming, if you do it is called ‘crossing the line.’

THE ARC: the camera may be placed anywhere along this arc as long as it does not cross the axis, this keeps spatial consistency between characters

THE 180⁰ RULE: This is a rule used in filming which relates to when 2 characters are interacting in a shot so the viewer finds the scene clear.

Match on actionMATCH ON ACTION: this is an editing technique in that when action happens in a film, any 2 shots match graphically.

Here the tubes are in 2 different positions even though it is supposed to be a continuous scene.

Match on action aims to eliminate this, errors occur as scenes take multiple takes, and then the footage has to be put together in the editing stages.

Shot, reverse shot

SHOT, REVERSE SHOT: this is most commonly used in talking scenes between 2 or more characters, it shows one character talking and then the shot switches to the second character when they respond. The viewers then assume that they are looking at each other.
