New Lockers - update
We are super excited!! Pleasant View Middle School is getting new lockers. NOW all lockers will be replaced over the March break. All students will be required to take all of their belongings home on Friday March 9.
Winter Activity Day
Friday, February 9 was the annual Pleasant View Activity Day. It
was an amazing and enjoyable day for students and staff as
they took part in activities that enriched their learning
experiences. Thank you to the PV staff who arranged such a
positive experience for our students! Please see pages 4-6 of
our newsletter for pictures from Activity Day.
PV Celebrates Black History Month
In music (band), students will read and discuss Before There Was Mozart, a true story about the musical superstar of 18th-century France, Joseph Boulogne — a black man. This inspiring book tells how Joseph, the only child of a black slave and her white master, becomes "the most accomplished man in Europe.” In grade 8 French class, transferring their skills in autobiography into a biographical segment, students will chose either a public Black figure or someone known to them personally to create a timeline of significant life events. A Mason Dixon Memoir
As part of the Grade 8 English curriculum the students read a memoir retelling two life stories w h e r e s k i n c o l o u r prevented these young men from participating in important events. During Black History Month, this selection was chosen to help students understand that friendship and kind words are more powerful than fists and guns. Students participated in a debate and were very engaged in preparation and presentation. All who participated gained a better
understanding of how racism needs to be addressed and that true friends rally in support of one another in difficult situations.

Goal Setting in French
Goal setting is always important in a classroom. As we welcomed 2018, students in grade 6 and 7 were asked to set some goals in French and express them in an artistic way. Mme Angelis 2- Two things I would like to learn…. (Je veux apprendre…….) 0- I would like to stop doing this bad habit…(Je veux arrêter……..) 1- One thing I can do to help my school, friend, community etc…. (Je veux aider…..) 8 - Eight random things I would like to do……. (Je veux……) State your final goal for the 2018 year…(Mon but final pour l’annee 2018 est…….)
Lego/Robotics Club 2018
Since the beginning of the school year, the Lego/Robotics Club
has been working on programming and building our robots so that
we could run them through different courses and test our skills.
First we had to build robots out of lego pieces. Then we had to
take to the computer and program it with the lego/robotics
software. It had to be programmed to run the specific course the
club designed for it, and to get to the robot’s final destination
without going off course or hitting any objects along the path.
Programming was tested, then reprogrammed and retested to
make sure the robot did what it was supposed to do.
Finally on February 15twe put the robots on display to the rest of
the school in a competition during lunch. The three contestants
were the teams Battlefield, Monster Track and Arthquak. All the
teams competed and it was fun to watch the members see their
final product and the other students in the cafeteria see how fun
programming really can be. Karim D. 8-2

Athletics
Congratulations to Rea, Jayrah, Andrea, Angelina, Nara, Carrie, Yalda and Ompalie for a great volleyball season! The girls finished second in their round robin pool, qualifying for the playoffs. They won the semi-final match against Don Valley in three sets and moved onto the finals against Glenview. Each team won a set but unfortunately Pleasant View Panthers lost in the third set. The grade 7 girls volleyball team came in second in the North Conference receiving a banner to add to the collection in the gym. Well done girls! Ms. Hoday
Google Translate
The Toronto District School Board
(TDSB) website now has Google
Translate, an online translation
service that makes information more
accessible for our community. Since the TDSB website and its web
pages are written in English, with the help of Google Translate, the
free tool can translate information posted on the website in over 100
languages.
The TDSB is committed to equity and community engagement, and
by providing this tool, we are making our information more
accessible to families whose first language is not English.
Helping All Students Succeed
In December, the Enhancing Equity Task Force shared a report that
provided a number of recommendations on how to support student
achievement and well-being through improving equity within our
system.
Our team has now reviewed that report and I want to share with you
our response and proposed directions to move our system forward to
enhance our support for each and every student in the TDSB.
Ensuring that each and every student is successful means providing
every student with the right tools, resources, supports, access and
opportunities they need to thrive. Making this happen requires a whole
-system perspective which includes examining our policies,
procedures and practices building staff capacity; reviewing our
resources and how they’re distributed; and setting high expectations
and increasing access. Real change, we know, happens in the
classroom but it must be supported by changes at the system level to
be transformational.
This report is the next step in our equity commitment. It will be
discussed by Trustees at the Planning and Priorities Committee on
January 31 and then at the Board meeting on February 7. Its proposed
direction – if approved by the Board in February – will inform our work
moving forward. Finally, if approved, these broad directions this will
lead to more detailed implementation. And, it should be noted that
where implementation requires a change to an existing Board policy,
staff will bring a report to Board on the proposed policy change that
will also offer opportunities for public input and consultation. We will
continue to work with and listen to our communities. Thank you to all
students, staff, families and community members who have shared
their voice, experiences, insights and time. This work is important and
we appreciate your commitment to and involvement in the process.

PV ACTIVITY DAY On Friday, February 9 a group of students travelled downtown on the subway with Ms. Austin and Ms. Singh to see the towers and tunnels of Toronto. We saw many different skyscrapers and learned about the different architecture. I loved it when we went to the fifty-fourth floor of the TD Tower. We were so high up it seemed as if we could see all of Toronto. The Towers and Tunnel trip was fascinating. I got to see
downtown like never before and I really enjoyed it. Layla M . 73

Skating at Cummer Community Centre
On Activity Day which took place on Friday February 9th, Ms. Hoday
and Ms. Ghasemi took a group of students skating. Our day was very
exciting, and full of fun things to do. First, we went to the arena to
skate and we played games such as dodge ball on the ice. Then, we
raced on the ice. Everyone had a great time. Next, we went to Tim
Horton’s. We ordered food, and left to go back to the school. Once
we got back to Pleasant View, we played board games and Pictionary
in the afternoon. Overall, going skating was very entertaining.
