Parent/Teacher Interviews
Parent/teacher interviews went extremely well. Thank you to all of our
parents who attended. If you were unable to attend, please contact
your child’s teacher to arrange an alternate time, as it is crucial that
we continue to work together to meet the needs of every child.

MY STEP TOWARDS GREATER EMPATHY

Safe Schools November 20 to 24 was Bullying Awareness and
Prevention Week. Bullying is an issue that the TDSB takes very
seriously. Every school is to have a Caring, Safe and Accepting
School Team that works together to ensure a positive school
climate. All of us have a part to play in making and keeping
schools safe. By working together, we can provide learning
environments that are caring, safe, accepting, respectful and
inclusive, and where students can acquire the knowledge,
skills and values they need to become responsible members of
their communities. Staff and
students worked on a number
of activities aimed at making
PV a more inclusive and
welcoming environment for
all. PV students and staff were
mesmerized watching the
“Bully Me no more” School
Magic Show. The Anti-
Bullying Magic Show is the
story of Professional Magician Coby, who was bullied as a
child through his teen years. The show gives students an
understanding of BULLYING as seen through the eyes of the
person who is being bullied. Also, students heard daily
announ cem ent fo cus s i ng on
messages about bullying during the
week.
At the end of this newsletter are some Cyber Bullying Tips for
Parents prepared by the TDSB Guidance Department.
On Wednesday, November 15th, PV students including grade 8 ambassadors travelled downtown to Central Technical School to attend the EnVision Conference. The Conference was filled with engaging activities for students and teachers who are of the LGBTQ+ community including their allies. Partnering with the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual diversity, EnVision was specifically meant for TDSB students. Students had opportunities to engage with issues they are currently facing, find answers to any questions, and learn more about how to effectively address anti-homophobia and anti-transphobia concerns in their community. It was an incredible experience, and the ambassadors are well on their way to educating their peers at Pleasant View. Mishaal A.-81

Winter Activity Day 2018
Pleasant View staff have organized a Winter Activity Day. This
enrichment program will occur all day on Friday February 9,
2018. Your child will be able to choose from a variety of
activities. Winter Activity Day provides students with an
opportunity to participate in new and exciting activities. They
will also be able to socialize with staff and students with whom
they may not normally interact on a daily basis. There will be
no other instructional program at the school on this day. It is
expected that all students participate in one of the activities
offered. Further information and permission forms will be sent
home shortly. Some activities include: bowling, skiing at Mount
St. Louis, skating and sports in the school. Thank you for your
continued support.
On Tuesday, November 7, all of the grade 8 students went up to
the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinberg. This provided
a wonderful culmination to our study of the Group of Seven in
visual arts. There were several interactive in-gallery and studio
programs enjoyed by our students. Many went on a hike of the
original McMichael property which included the Sculpture gardens,
the McMichael Wetland area, and the Ceremonial Garden. Some
then created digital landscape drawings on I-pads, others learned
about basic pencil drawing techniques using graded pencils, and
other groups gained a greater sense of the challenges
encountered while painting outdoors as the Group of Seven would
have experienced. This was an incredible opportunity to see actual
paintings we had studied in class, and to see the wonderful gallery
that has grown to a
world class
collection, from
such small and
humble beginnings.

Winter Weather
From time to time, it may be
necessary to close programs due to severe weather. On rare
occasions, severe weather makes it necessary to close schools.
With approximately 246,000 students in our schools and sites
each day, any decision to cancel buses, classes and/or programs
or to close sites can have a significant impact on thousands of
families across Toronto. This decision is not taken lightly. When
schools remain open on days with inclement weather,
parents/guardians make the final decision on whether to send
their children to school and they can keep children home from
school if they so choose.
Should a cancellation or closure be necessary, information will be
posted on the TDSB website, TDSB social media and provided to
local media by 6 a.m.

Many families still have not updated their child’s immunization records with Toronto Public Health. Avoid student suspension:
Parents can update your child’s vaccinations: Online at www.toronto.ca/immunization or Call the Immunization Information Line at 416-392-1250. There are free Toronto Public Health vaccination clinics for students with limited access to healthcare.
