The War in Europe Russia, Great Britain, and France declared war on the Ottoman Empire. Bulgaria joined Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. British forces from Egypt defeated the Ottoman Empire. Japan, a British ally, seized German islands in the Pacific Ocean. The Central Powers had greater success on the Eastern Front, capturing hundreds of miles of territory and taking hundreds of thousands of prisoners.

1914 to 1915: Illusions and Stalemate Propaganda, ideas spread to influence opinion, stirred up hatred before the war. All European wars since 1815 had only lasted a few weeks. On the Western Front, Germany got close to Paris at the First Battle of the Marne. Germany and France became locked in a stalemate along hundreds of miles of trench warfare for three years.

Combat in World War I Soldiers dug trenches for protection from modern weapons. “No man’s land” was the between opposing trenches. In battles, both sides lost several hundred thousand men. To reduce causalities, new technologies were created. Poison gas, first used by the Germans, caused vomiting, blindness, and suffocation. Tanks were unsuccessfully used. Airplanes spied, dropped small bombs, and dog fights.

On the Eastern Front, the Russian army moved into Germany but was defeated. The Russians defeated Austria-Hungary and freed Serbia. The Italians, once their allies, attacked Austria-Hungary. The Germans helped the Austrians defeat the Russians driving them back. About 2.5 million Russians had been killed, captured, or wounded.
