A soldier's ChristmasTwas the night before Christmas,
he lived all alone, in a one bedroomhouse made of plaster and stone. I hadcome down the chimney with presentsto give, and to see just who in thishome did live. I looked all about, astrange sight I did see, no tinsel, nopresents, not even a tree
No stocking by mantle, just bootsfilled with sand, and on the wall pic-tures of far distant lands. With med-als and badges, awards of all kinds, asobering thought came to my mind. For this house was different, so darkand so dreary, the home of a solider, now I could see clearly.
The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone, curled up on the floor in thisone bedroom home. The face was sogentle, the room in such disorder, nothow I pictured a United States soldier. Was this the hero of whom I'd just
read? Curled up on a poncho, the floorfor a bed?
I realized the families that I sawthis night, owed their lives to thesesoldiers who were willing to fight.Soon round the world, the childrenwould play, and grownups would cel-ebrate a bright Christmas day. They allenjoyed freedom each month of theyear, because of the soldiers, like theone lying here.
I couldn't help wonder how manylay alone, on a cold Chrismtas eve ina land far from home. The verythought brought a tear to my eye, Idropped to my knees and started tocry. The soldier awakened and I heard
a rough voice, "Santa don't cry, thislife is my choice,
"I fight for freedom, I don't ask formore, my life is my God, my countrymy corps." The soldier rolled over andsoon drifted asleep, I couldn't controlit, I continued to weep. I kept watchfor hours, so silent and still, and weboth shivered from the cold evening'schill.
I didn't want to leave on that cold, dark night, this guardian of honor sowilling to fight. Then the soldierrolled over with a voice soft and pure, whispered, "Carry on Santa, it'sChristmas day, all is secure." One lookat my watch and I knew he was right,"Merry Christmas my friend and to alla good night."
