1.2 Estimation with Whole Numbers

Estimate sums, differences, products, and quotients of whole numbers.

Remember!

When you round, you

look to the digit to the

right.

5 or greater – round UP

4 or less – round DOWN

Clustering - estimating a sum when the addends are about the same.

1802 + 2182 + 1999

2000 + 2000 + 2000

Underestimate –

an estimate that is less than the exact answer.

Overestimate –

an estimate that is more than the exact answer.
