Have you ever wondered whats under the hood of your computer? How it all works? My high school teacher used to tell me that computers are just like a human because we built them. In fact computers are designed very similarly to humans. It all starts with few of the components illustrated on the picture. To the right of the scanner numbered [1] is the case, or tower that holds all the components in, as a chassis. 1) The main component which is the first unit installed in a computer is the motherboard. The motherboard or mainboard is what holds all the other components together, connects them and controls them to perform an action on your monitor [10]. 2) The next important unit that attaches on the motherboard is the CPU or central processing unit that together with the motherboard forms the brain of the computer. The CPU is a small microprocessor that performs calculations with incredible speeds to display images and 3) The human brain has two types of memories, a short term and a long term. The Random Access Memory or RAM, acts like the short term memory that loads and unloads information from different peripherals including the Hard Disk [7] and send in for processing, like a loading bay of a harbour. 4) These are the expansion cards for the computer that attach with the motherboard [8] and perform different tasks. There are different types of Expansion cards that are in use. The most important one would be the video card or graphics card, its job is to generate extensive graphics for applications and games. Other expansion cards would be the modem card that allows you to connect to the internet, or the sound card, to connect your speakers, usually used for better sound

quality. 5) The power supply is like our digestive system; it takes in electricity as we take in food and supplies the appropriate voltage to the peripherals, as the stomach digests and supplies energy accordingly. A common office computer works with an average of 350 WATT, an extreme gamer can require more than 1600 WATT. 6) This is the optical disk drive, a secondary storage unit which stores information on CDs, DVDs or similar type of discs. This type of media is usually used to sell software applications like games due to its portable size. CDs and DVDs are now being replaced with internet downloadable software and USB drives. 7) The Hard Disk Drive or HDD for short. It acts as the long term memory of the human brain and stores information permanently. Regularly computers need no more than 20 Gigabytes to work, the rest of the memory available s for the users Junk. 8) All this processing and electrical wiring is a waste without having a monitor to view it all. They come in different sizes and different shapes but its not always the bigger the better. The size you should buy depends on the distance between you and the monitor and always makes sure that you get good monitors. Multimedia monitors are usually a better choice. They might be slightly more expensive, but do not cause your eyes any harm with their slow refresh rate. 9) Speakers are very common on PCs and Laptops, they come in different sizes and power. It is the mouth of your computer and you dont want a loud, nagging one. 10) A keyboard and mouse, something which is most common on computer, they are the most effective input

devices, for now. Interestng fact is that the keyboard layout was designed by Qwert Yuiop, now have a look at the first row of letters on your keyboard, just under the numbers. 11) Applications are everything on the computer, like your sub-conscious and instructions for doing something. You have learned how to cook (if you know), same way a computer is programmed to do something. Windows is just a set of programs working together. If you press Ctrl + Alt + Del together and click on the processes tab, you will see all the programs running to make your windows work. 12) Games are just the same as applications, the difference is to provide us with entertainment and waste our time, unless its your job to play games, like some experts in several countries that are game testers (lucky them). 13) Just like the internal Hard Disk [7], you can have an external one. The only difference is that you can take it with you anywhere, but you can shorten its lifespan by carrying it around. 14-15) Printers and scanners now-days come together in one and they can also include fax machine. There are two commercial types of printers, laser and ink jets. Ink jets accept small cartilage with ink and blows fine amount of ink on the paper as it moves from side to side. Laser printers charge up a tube drum which comes in contact with the required paint. The colour sticks to the drum which is later transferred to the paper. Despite it being faster printing method and longer lasting ink, the image quality does not compare to an equivalent ink-jet printer. Saro Nadjarian
