ACC State Advocacy Workgroup:

A Resource for Rising Chapters

2

• Not my job

• Someone else will take care of it

• I don’t have the time

• Nothing I do will make a difference

Perceptions of Advocacy

3

• Advocacy is a partnership

• Policymakers need to hear from you.

• ACC staff and lobbyists can’t speak from experience; we aren’t directly

affected.

• Physician leadership is critical

The Reality Is…

4

The “Coat of Credibility”

November 2009 Gallup poll asked participants to rank more than 40 professions by their perceived honesty.

“Medical doctors” and “police officers” were the only two professions to INCREASE over previous year’s poll number.

5

State Advocacy Issues

• Medical Malpractice

• Imaging

• Certificate of Need requirements

• Hospital-Practice Integration issues

7

Not All Chapters Are Created Equal

All successful chapters have (at least) one thing

in common…

An advocacy infrastructure that is ready to take action.

8

Keys to A Successful Advocacy Infrastructure

• Alliance with state medical association

• Alliance with AHA and other state groups

• Strong advocacy committee

• Identification of your grasstops and key contacts

• Established relationships with legislators

9
