Warm-Up, 08.26.2009 (15 mins)

• Why is the scientific method important? Can you think of anything the scientific method can’t do?

• Why is it important that scientists (and people in everyday life) be as accurate as possible?

• What do you think life was like before systems of measurement were invented?

Announcements

• By now you should have turned in:– Lab Safety Sheet (signed)– Class Rules/Syllabus (signed)

• By the end of today you should have:– 3 warm-ups & 3 wrap-ups– Your binder and dividers

Today’s Objectives

• Students will be able to:– Understand how to measure and estimate lengths– Become more aware of linear measurements in

the world and communicate better about the significance of these measurements.

– Understand the importance of measurement in science.

– Understand the relative sizes of things using scientific notation.

Ladder Method

How do you use the “ladder” method?

1st – Determine your starting point.

2nd – Count the “jumps” to your ending point.

3rd – Move the decimal the same number of jumps in the same direction.

4 km = _________ m

12

3

How many jumps does it take?

Starting Point Ending Point

4.1

__.2

__.3

__. = 4000 m

Measurement Unit Tool

length meter, cm, km, light year

Ruler, meter stick, yard stick

volume Liter, mL, cubic centimeter

Graduated cylinder, beaker

mass Gram, kilogram, milligram

Triple-beam balance

weight Newton Weighing scale

density D=M/V

temperature Celsius thermometer

Scientific Notation

A short-hand way of writinglarge numbers without writing all of the zeros.

The Distance From the Sun to the Earth

93,000,000

Step 1

• Move decimal left• Leave only one number in front of decimal

Step 2

• Write number without zeros

Step 3

• Count how many places you moved decimal• Make that your power of ten

The power often is 7 becausethe decimalmoved 7 places.

• 93,000,000 --- Standard Form

• 9.3 x 107 --- Scientific Notation

Powers of Ten - Video

• I need a two volunteers for after the video– One will write out the size of the smallest thing we

know about.– One will write out the size of the largest thing we

know about.

The largest “thing” currently known

The smallest measurable “thing” currently known

Discovering even smaller particles….

Wrap-Up

• If you had one wish, what would it be and why? You can’t wish for more wishes, by the way.

• What did we learn today?• What is due next class?
