Newest YouTube stars: Minneapolis GA airports

The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) of Minneapolis-St. Paul is showcasing its reliever airports in new videos on YouTube.

The reliever airports — Airlake Airport (Lakeville), Anoka County–Blaine (Blaine), Crystal Airport (Crystal), Flying Cloud Airport (Eden Prairie), and St. Paul Downtown Airport/Holman Field (St. Paul) — are strategically positioned across the metro region to serve GA and relieve congestion at Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport. MAC’s reliever system is one of the largest in the nation with more than 400,000 takeoffs and landings annually, and a local economic impact of $255 million.

The series of fast-paced videos was created to showcase the variety of the airports in the MAC reliever system, as well as to broadcast what each of the GA facilities have in common: convenience and an exciting atmosphere for aviation enthusiasts, MAC officials said.

See the videos for yourself at YouTube.com/user/MetAirCommission.

“It was a big thrill to fly the ‘Spirit.’ I have even greater respect for (Lindbergh’s) airmanship after having seen how unstable the airplane is. There is no way it could get certified today. You have to fly it every second.”

— Linden Blue of Spectrum Aeronautical, who was one of eight pilots who won a chance to fly the EAA’s “Spirit of St. Louis” reproduction

“We determined that general aviation presents only limited and mostly hypothetical threats to security.”

— Inspector General’s report on “TSA’s Role in General Avia-tion”

“The market for new aircraft remains frozen as customers wait to see if the recovery forecasted comes to fruition.”

— Cessna’s Jack Pelton

“Flying might not be all plain sailing, but the fun of it is worth the price.”

— Amelia Earhart

“Any pilot can describe the mechanics of flying. What it can do for the spirit of man is beyond description.”

— Barry Goldwater, US senator and Air Force pilot

“I didn’t start out to chart the skies; it’s just no one had done it before.”

— E. B. Jeppesen

“For a plane to fly well, it must be beautiful.”

What is it?

Part of the fun of being an aviation fan is finding old airplane parts and trying to figure out what they are.

Members of the Collings Foundation, a non-profit group that travels around the country giving rides in vintage military aircraft, recently came into possession of several aircraft instruments. The foundation is selling the instruments along its route to help pay for the upkeep of its fleet of aircraft.

During a stop in Hillsboro, Ore., there was great debate over what this instrument is. It is similar to a telescope with different color lenses. Can you help determine what it is?

You can send your guess to Comments@GeneralAviationNews.com

or find out more at CollingsFoundation.org

Weird airport names

A cheap flight website, Skyscanner.com, recently scoured its database of more than 10,000 airports around the world and handpicked what its staff thought were the funniest, rudest and weirdest airport names.

On the list are Batman Airport (BAL), Turkey; Useless Loop Airport (USL), Australia; Mafia Airport (MFA), Tanzania; Moron Airport (OZP), Spain; Desolation Sound Airport (YDS), Canada; Deadhorse Airport (SCC), USA; and Atlanta Beaver Ruin Airport (JAO), USA.

Have you discovered any interesting airport names on your travels?

Send them to Janice@GeneralAviationNews.com and we’ll run a list in an upcoming issue.

Waco Classic Aircraft has overhauled its YMF-5C biplane, adding many new features and upgrades to the YMF-5D.

“This new model delivers greater performance than ever before,” said Peter Bowers, president of the Battle Creek, Mich.-based company.

The plane has more horsepower, thanks to a new Jacobs R755-A2 300-hp engine, and the weight of the aircraft is lower, due to design changes and the expanded use of lightweight materials.

The new model, expected to receive certification by October, also features a new Sensenich Taper Tip prop, a leather interior, new lightweight carbon fiber wheel pants and fairings, an upgraded avionics package and even a cupholder.

The three-place biplane is based on a design that was first certified in 1935. Prices start at $395,500. The new model will be on display at AirVenture in Oshkosh later this month.

Opens the state to new aircraft owners without worries about paying taxesby Jennifer renner-goWAnFor General Aviation News

The Florida Department of Revenue has given the green light to visitors to bring their new airplanes to the state.

The state has a long-standing statute that requires sales tax to be paid on new aircraft purchased elsewhere and then brought to Florida within six months of the date of purchase. If sales tax was paid at the time of purchase, but at a lower tax rate, then the owner would be liable for the difference. The use-tax statute was meant to ensure that Florida owners didn’t shirk their tax obligations by buying their new aircraft

in another state with a more favorable tax rate. However, an unintended consequence of the law is that

out-of-state aircraft owners worried that they would have to pay Florida sales tax if they visit an air show or fly-in or bring their family to Florida for a vacation. That led pilots to cancel trips to the state or even re-route their trips to avoid stopping for fuel in Florida.

“There has been an attitude of ‘Hey, whatever you do, don’t go to Florida’ with a new plane,” said David Allen, president of the Florida Aviation Trades Association, which held its annual conference last month.

That fear negatively impacts tourism, as well as all the aviation businesses based in Florida.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association recently asked the Florida Department of Revenue for clarification on the use tax law, since many of the association’s members will be attending the AOPA Aviation Summit in Tampa this fall. The Florida Department of Revenue replied on June 19,

writing that: “a brief, recreational use of property in Florida will not, by itself, subject an aircraft owner to use tax.”

FATA, AOPA and other alphabet groups have been lobbying tirelessly to get an amendment to the use tax passed. The legislation, HB 1379, proposed by Ralph Poppel in the Florida House and a companion bill by Steve Wise in the Florida Senate would amend the law to allow a 21-day stay within the first six months of ownership without any tax being imposed. That bill passed the House but stalled in the Senate, as economic and budget worries pushed it to the back burner.

“The uphill battle for FATA and the other aviation groups who are supporting our efforts is to work with the legislators to give them the necessary information so they realize they are not giving a tax exemption for aircraft owners, but providing a way to boost Florida’s tourism industry,” said Paula Raeburn, FATA’s executive director.

James Bass resigned last month as president and CEO of Piper Aircraft Inc. He has been replaced by Kevin Gould, vice president of operations, who is now CEO, and John Becker, vice president of engineering, who is now president.

Bass said that he had completed his mission at Piper, which was to “turn the

company around, create a strong, highly competitive business, and make Piper a compelling choice for potential buyers. With the sale of Piper to Imprimis, we have achieved that milestone.”

In May, American Capital Strategies

sold Piper to Imprimis, an investment company that has offices in Bangkok, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.

The new owners say Piper will remain in Vero Beach, Florida.

Under three days of perfect blue skies and full moon cloudless evenings, “The Final Curtain” of The Biplane Expo’s successful run of 23 years of “Biplanes at Bartlesville” came to a standing ovation close on Saturday, June 6, according to Charlie Harris, chair-man of the National Biplane Association.

The Grand Finale attracted 115 biplanes, 241 other grassroots aircraft, and 10 high-profile flight demonstration Warbirds to Bartlesville. More than 6,500 people attended the event.

Every year, the Biplane Expo recognizes America’s finest aviators. This year, Dick Rutan, who piloted the Voyager aircraft around the world non-stop, was the Expo’s honored guest.

The overwhelming turnout of biplanes and people was attributed to the exceptionally fine weather, the

presence of Rutan and the desire of so many National Biplane Association members and fans to attend the final Biplane Expo, Harris noted.

Many seasoned professional biplane pilots

remarked the 115 biplanes on the field was the larg-est number of civilian biplanes they had ever seen in one place, he added.

Final curtain for Biplane Expo

Wichita-based Belite Aircraft unveiled its prototype airplane June 30.

The Belite will be offered in both kit form and as a completed, flyable airplane.

James Wiebe, president and CEO of Belite Aircraft, provided details on modifications he had made to lighten and modernize the Belite aircraft, which is the former Kitfox Lite ultralight.

“The Belite design incorporates a new carbon fiber wing and lift struts,” he said. “In addition, we’ve used carbon fiber in the cabin and firewall. As a result, our aircraft is FAR103 legal while offering a real instrument panel with real avionics, as well as a great engine.”

James and Kathy Wiebe, who previously developed and marketed digital forensic computer storage devices, acquired the tooling, existing parts and manufacturing rights of the Kitfox Lite in March and immediately began a complete review of the structure and composition.

An instrument-rated pilot, James Wiebe developed a proprietary lightweight carbon fiber structure that has been utilized to strengthen and lighten spars, ribs and struts, replacing traditional steel, wood or aluminum to reduce the airplane’s empty weight.

Wiebe plans to take the Belite airplane to EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh later this month.

FAA, Air Force work to open military airspace to civilians

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The FAA and the U.S. Air Force are trying to find ways for more civilian flights to use airspace now off limits because of military operations.

This has been done in the past and the two are now trying to agree on ways to make it permanent.

It is hoped a permanent agreement could alleviate some of the delays civil-ian flights have when thunderstorms, a large number of flights, or other constraints affect the number of flights that can move in designated airspace. FAA officials noted this worked well last Thanksgiving when “express lanes” were created in military-controlled air-space for commercial flights.

One of the ideas now under consider-ation is to expand the airspace for the Air Force but to divide it into boxes. When weather or traffic conditions indicate a need for more civilian airspace, the Air Force could shift its operations into the boxes not needed by the FAA.

At present, the Air Force is the only military participant in the program. Other arms of the military have their airspace and could be included in any final agreement.

Whatever plan the FAA and Department of Defense finally agree on, pilots will need to check open airspace carefully if flying VFR.

FAA BUDGETTe s t i f y i n g t o t h e H o u s e

Appropriations Subcommittee on Aviation, FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt said the agency’s budget request for $15.9 billion for fiscal year 2010 “maintains safety and capacity gains while providing investments to meet future system demands.” Financing for the future includes a request for $865 million for NextGen, the next generation of the air traffic control system. This is a 24% increase.

Babbitt told subcommittee members that talks to resolve differences between controllers and the FAA “are going very well” and he is optimistic about reaching an agreement. However, just two days after he made that statement, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) accused the FAA of creating staffing problems when it split the tower and radar control functions at Memphis International Airport.

To meet controller staffing needs, the FAA expects to hire 1,700 controllers next year. Over the past five years FAA has hired 5,600 new air traffic control-lers.

It is not just the controllers union that interests Babbitt. There are seven other unions and 15,000 employees who

are not part of any union. “We need to restore confidence in the entire work-force,” he said.

The FY 2010 request also includes $3.5 billion for airports, which Babbitt said allows the FAA to focus on safety-related development projects, including runway safety area improvements, run-way incursion reduction, and improving infrastructure conditions.

Babbitt made no references to user fees for the FY 2010 budget, although they are in President Obama’s proposals. The House reauthorization bill does not include fees but the Senate has yet to move on reauthorization.

Proposal calls for TSAcommittee on security

Representative Charlie Dent (R-Pa.) recently introduced legislation that would require TSA to create a rulemaking committee with GA industry officials to develop security measures for the indus-try, including the controversial Large Aircraft Security Program (LASP).

“This legislation shows that Congress understands that we can accomplish more good if we work together rather than separately,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen.

More than 7,000 comments were submitted to the TSA in February regarding the LASP proposal. Almost all of the comments suggested that the proposed changes, which would impose airline-type security measures on GA, would be onerous to the entire general aviation community. TSA officials have since said they will issue a new notice of proposed rulemaking before issuing a final LASP rule.

10 General Aviation News — 800.426.8538 July 10, 2009

When someone of fers you the chance to fly in a P-51 Mustang, you do not pass it up.

I recently flew “Betty Jane,” a rare two-place P-51 that is making its way around the coun-try on the Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom Tour. The foundation also has its B-17, “Nine-oh-Nine,” and the B-24 “Witchcraft” making the rounds. I was going to be flying with the bombers.

During the flight from Corvallis to Hillsboro, Ore., I flew from the rear seat. In the front seat was Jimmy Rollison, a profes-sional pilot who flies like a fish swims.

Climbing into a P-51 requires a certain amount of physical agility. Step on the tire and swing your leg up. Step carefully toward the cockpit. Be careful not to lean on the canopy. Swing your leg in and step on the seat. Be prepared to get friendly with the guy who straps you in. Make sure the har-ness is snug and note where the D-ring is for the parachute so that you don’t grab it by accident.

“We won’t do any hang upside down maneuvers,” Rollison said, but I was warned there would be some gravity-defying moves.

I made sure I was able to reach the con-trols, then stowed my camera and turned on the digital audio recorder. The pre-start checklist was executed and the engine roared to life.

Rollison let me on the controls for taxi-ing. I was happy that I recently got some tailwheel practice in, but there is a big difference between a Cessna 140 and the P-51.

A pre-takeoff checklist and a few radio calls later we were ready to go.

I shadowed Rollison on the controls as the throttle went forward. I had heard that Mustangs climb like homesick angels and, brother, is it true! I left my stomach back on the ramp and it was a good 10 minutes before I got it back. We gained some altitude and Rollison put us into a barrel roll.

“DO IT AGAIN!!!” I screamed, one hand on the stick, the other on the trigger of the camera.

The first part of the mission that morn-ing was a photo flight.

Formation flying is more than a skill, it is an art form, like an aerial ballet. The pilots are in constant communication, letting each other know location and intentions.

“Coming up on your right, Jim,” Rollison said to Jim Harley, the B-17 pilot. “I’m put-ting him on your left, Meg. Here we come Jim, I’m going to bounce you.”

The B-17 got closer and closer to us. I could see Harley in the cockpit taking pictures. The wastegunner position was nothing but cameras. I shot them, they shot

me. After the flight the other photographers commented that they thought a Cheshire cat was in the back seat of the Mustang because all they saw was a smile.

I shot more than 300 pictures during the 90-minute flight. The downside of this is that looking through the viewfinder can get you queasy. I put the camera away and focused on flying.

“Your airplane. You have the controls,” Rollison finally said.

“I have the controls,” I repeated, taking the stick and putting my feet more securely on the rudders.

“Let’s gain some altitude,” Rollison said as we approached some hills, “and give me a turn to 330°.”

You have not lived until you have done climbs, turns and descents in a Mustang.

It was lighter on the stick and rudder than I thought it would be, but I was very con-scious of how fast we were going. The P-51 has a drum-type airspeed indicator and I kept thinking, “does that really show 200+ mph?”

He had me slow it down so I could see the rudder forces. Wow, talk about p-factor! We headed over to McMinnville to make a low pass over the runway by the Evergreen Aviation Museum. Seeing the museum as you are barreling by is a inter-esting experience. People on the ground waved as we went by.

Finally it was time to land. I didn’t want to get out of the airplane.

“I think she liked it,” Rollison remarked to the people who approached the airplane to ask how the ride was. He had to answer because I was non-verbal due to the smile to end all smiles.

The adventure did not end there. A few days later the Collings Foundation tour was in Bremerton, Wash. The airport is not too far from me, and I took one of my students to see the bombers. We were in a Cessna 152. After a little over an hour on the ramp, it was time to head home. As we climbed away from the airport I heard Rollison’s voice over the unicom: “I’m on your right, Meg.” I looked over and there was the Mustang. I rocked my wings. Rollison rocked his in return, then pulled up and climbed over us in a majestic arc.

“FREAKIN’ AWESOME!” my student screamed.

I fully agree.For more information: CollingsFoundation.org.

Meg and the Mustang PLANES FOR LARGER PILOTSMeg Godlewski hit the spot with “Heavy

thoughts on Light Sport” in the Feb. 20 issue.Back in 2000 when I started as a CFI, I put in

two 30-minute flights with two different students in a C-150. Being 6 foot, 3 inches, 220 lbs. and age 64, I had to really work to get into and out of that beast. It took me longer to get out than any emergency would ever allow me to save my butt. I told the flight school owner that was it for me, only 172 or larger.

Back in the late 1980s, I had quarter share of a Cardinal RG. Now that was a sweet bird to enter, fly or exit.

As you stated in your article, there are a lot of folks who want in, but poor design keeps them out, looking in. It would be nice to see more designs come on the market to fit the larger customers.

ELI VUJOVICH, CFIISouthington, Ohio

DOWNRIGHT FRIGHTENINGI found Deb McFarland’s March 20 column,

“The Land of Perfect: Internet forums reveal the doomsayers, loons and other pilot types,” precisely on point.

I have been flying professionally since 1990. I have just over 7,000 hours in 30 makes and models of aircraft, and over 5,000 of it dual given.

Your article reminded me of an occasion during my own instrument rating training. I was flying a Piper Arrow in IMC with the CFI in the right seat and the plane’s owner in the back seat. We had picked him up for a ride home from his corporate pilot job, and I was getting a discount on the plane rental as a bonus. En route, I saw the need for a 2°-3° degree heading correction to remain established on the course and I used the rudder to make the small heading change. Sitting in the back, the owner yelled, “What are you doing? Using the rudder like that can spin the airplane! You NEVER use the rudder like that!” I was rather impressed by my instructor, who risked his job by telling the owner, “You don’t know what you are talking about!”

I am often amazed by the inadequate flight instruction I see — everything from pilots putting their feet flat on the floor as soon as the airplane lifts off and then banking to stop the airplane from turn-ing in the climb, to jet pilots departing a non-towered airport by turning early and crossing the downwind leg of the pattern as they climb out, directly in front of a student in the pattern. It ranges from mildly amusing to downright frightening, and I think it’s the most dangerous thing about aviation.

I believe we need to find a better way to get people the flight hours they need to get that airline job. There are just too many folks out there teach-ing just to build time, who teach just enough to get the student to pass his checkride, and their product shows it. I’m doing my part by declining to teach a CFI candidate who lacks the attitude of customer service, dedication to professionalism, and almost natural teaching ability that makes for a good teacher.

The best combination for good starting and high temperature protection

Reader David Bennett recently wrote in, asking about oil tempera-ture vs. oil grade.

“When oil is rated for a certain temperature range, is that start-up tem-perature range or the range for most of the intended trip? My Super Cub handbook states SAE 40 is good from 30°F to 90°F, but on the Aeroshell site, it says 0°F to 70°F. Which is right?”

Temperature vs. oil viscosity is impor-tant at both start-up and cruise. If the oil is too thick at start-up, it will increase the time from when the engine first turns to when oil reaches critical wear surfaces. This can increase the wear rate and reduce engine life.

The temperature to be concerned with is the ambient temperature of the engine at start-up. If your plane is sitting outside, that is the temperature of your engine. If

your plane is in a heated hangar, that is the ambient temperature.

To determine which oil to use, consult your handbook or engine manufacturer. Most engines recommend using a SAE 50 or grade 100 oil for most warm weather conditions. However, on smaller Teledyne Continental Motors engines and some others, a grade 80 or SAE 40 oil is recommended for most warm weather conditions.

The rule of thumb that I would recom-mend is to use the recommended SAE grade single grade oil for the warm sum-mer months. When most of your start-ups are at or near freezing (32°F), switch to a lower grade or multi-grade oil.

The other concern is temperature at cruise conditions. If your oil is too thick under severe cold, you can experience oil cooler plugging.

However, under warm conditions, you want a thicker oil to ensure that you have adequate oil film thickness in critical bear-ings and wear surfaces. You do not want to be flying in hot temperatures with oil that is too thin.

This goes back to my recommendation to use the grade 100 oil, or 80 if recom-mended, for most of your summer flying and then switch to a multi-grade during the winter or colder months. This seems to give the best combination of good start-ing and best high temperature protection.

PRESERVATIVE OILSI also have received several questions

concerning the use of preservative oils. I recommend the use of one quart of preservative oil for pilots who will be using their planes infrequently, like during the winter months. This is not recommended for long term storage where straight preservative oil is recom-mended.

While I cannot give exact numbers for storage time on each product, I recom-mend that, under most conditions, one quart of preservative oil will be good for up to five to six months. If you are going to store your engine longer, use 100% preservative oil.

However, this depends on your weather and humidity conditions. For example, if you live in Arizona where it

is very dry, you can extend this, but if you live in humid Florida, six months can be too long.

And remember: These recommenda-tions are guidelines,

not absolute limits, so use some common sense.

“You do not want to be flying in hot temperatures with oil that is too thin.”

The annual Arlington Fly-In and Sport Aircraft Convention takes off July 8-12 at Arlington Municipal Airport (AWO), north of Seattle.

A highlight of this year’s show is a presentation by Arty Trost, a long-distance pilot who flew her open cockpit ultralight from her home in Oregon to Florida for the Sun ’n Fun Fly-In.

For aircraft builders there are

several workshops on materials and techniques, including a composite workshop that is free with advanced reservation.

Other planned activities include radio-controlled aircraft, jet and heli-copter demonstrations, the appearance of the only airworthy Boeing 40 in existence, and a car show.

Today’s down market puts new life into the Cessna 310R

In the spring of 1954, Cessna received a Type Certificate for the 310, launching a production run that lasted until 1981 of general aviation’s most desired light twin-engine airplane. The most famous was the 1958 310B used in the TV series “Sky King.”

Through the years, the 310 evolved to become a larger, more powerful, and better performing airplane, culminating with the final variant, the 310R, which debuted in 1975.

So why, with a used plane market that has tanked and fuel prices sure to increase, are we focusing on a legacy twin engine airplane?

That’s because today’s down market means you can get more plane for less money.

The new singles that push 200 knots, costing more than $500,000, or Raytheon’s $1.2 million Baron 58, can’t touch the hauling ability of the 310Rs, which are selling for well under $200,000.

The 1977 310R pictured is a good example of a clean, low-time, market-ready airplane. It’s updated with a Garmin 530, GDL-69 receiver for Nexrad weather, and GTX 330 transponder with traffic displayed on the GNS 530. A KX-155 nav/com, H.S.I., Stormscope, monochrome radar, and original 400B autopilot complete the avionics.

With a maximum takeoff weight of 5,500 pounds, useful load is 1,824 pounds. Even with topped-off tanks, cabin load is still 846 pounds. This means four 200-pound occupants and 200 pounds of baggage can fly IFR from Charlotte, N.C., to 500-plus nm destinations such as West Palm Beach, Fla., or Teterboro, N.J., with very conservative reserves.

With flexible loading potential and a big cabin, the 310R has the space for six adults and all their stuff. Baggage can be loaded in the nose compartment, wing lockers, or aft cabin area.

Of course, the best seat in the house is the front left. In that seat, this design from the 1970s still holds up for relative ease of operation.

The fuel selector for each engine is located between the two front seats. The system is simple to operate. However, it also can be the most complicated system

on the airplane, especially when you factor in the various auxiliary fuel options. A little study is all that’s required to manage fuel like a pro.

On the left side wall is a convenient waterfall panel of accessory switches and circuit breakers. The most inconvenient aspect of the panel is that all engine and system gauges are way over on the right side. Monitoring these instruments takes a definitive effort in the scan.

Engine starts are a snap. Whether starting in below freezing conditions or high summer temperatures, I’ve always found the 310R to be a predictable starting airplane. Ground handling is quite easy. With a 9-foot, 2-inch wheel base and a nose gear that is vertical, taxi turns are a snap. Add a little brake and differential power and impressive tight turns can be made.

Takeoffs in the 310R are pure fun. Acceleration is

brisk, thanks to the twin 285-hp Continentals. The 80 knot Vmc comes and goes quickly and lift-off occurs at 92 knots with the best twin-engine rate of climb speed of 107 knots quickly established.

Once that objective is met, cruise climb power is established, auxiliary pumps are turned off, and mixtures are adjusted.

Obstacle clearance takeoffs are performed with 15° of flaps and an initial climb speed of 85 knots. That close to Vmc, with 15° of flaps, is not the most comfortable place to be. However, the 310R establishes

an excellent climb angle while blowing right past 85 as well as its safe single engine speed of 92 knots. The 310 loves to climb, and it loves to get out of that low speed range quickly.

Top of the green arcs in climb power and 120 knots indicated is a nice set-up for going to cruise altitude. I normally fly 310Rs at 250 to 500 pounds below gross and, under this scenario, I can expect around 1,500 fpm to about 6,000 feet; then 1,000 to 1,200 fpm through around 9,000 feet; and then around 800 fpm up to 12,000 feet.

I dug back into my trip logs from years past and found one particular five-day route that required 11.7 hours — some long legs, some short. True airspeeds ranged from a low of 185 knots to a high of 198 knots. All that flying consumed 280.9 gallons of fuel for a block average of 24 gph.

Even down low, the 310R gives excellent cruise performance. For example, I recently ran a short trip and stayed at 3,000 feet. At 65% power, TAS hit 175 knots with a 27.5 gph fuel flow — I lean conservatively for engine health first, economy second.

The 310, regardless of model year, is a delight to fly. The ride is solid in cruise, deftly handling turbulence. The controls are smooth and, although firm, not tiring even after a long day of flying. Control response is excellent and conventional in every manner. The first 15° of flaps can come out at 158 knots. The landing gear and rest of the flaps can come out at or below 138 knots.

The flight manual calls for a 93-knot approach speed with full flaps. This is certainly a stable speed and can help produce impressive short field landings. I have taken 310Rs into 1,800-foot runways on a regular basis. I kept one of the three 310s I used to own at a 2,500-foot

grass field as well. Certainly I was light going in and coming out – using a larger paved airport nearby for times when the takeoff weight was heavy.

For more “normal” landings I like to target 100 knots and gently walk off the throttles to idle as the threshold is crossed. Very pleasing and consistent arrivals can be achieved in the 310 — especially the R model where that extended nose seems to help with a more fluid round out in the flare.

Recent recurrent training for my CFI renewal check ride in the 310R reminded me once again how decently this plane flies on one engine. Even when I opted to leave rudder trim neutral, I didn’t blow out my ACL pushing on the rudder. No piston twin is going to blow your socks off climbing on one engine, but the 310R can be depended on to give a solid climb even when heavy on a hot day as long as your technique is good. The single engine rate of climb is 370 fpm at sea level, standard conditions at gross weight. Try it at 2,000 feet and 80° and you still get around 250 fpm. Planning and proficiency is key.

THE BOTTOM LINEFinancial planning and maintenance proficiency are

key as well when it comes to owning any twin and the 310 is no different.

The cost of fuel last summer was one factor in the

drop in twin values. Consider, though, that any of the modern singles that can keep up with the 310 also suck some gas. Twice the engines, in the real world, means more like 30% more in fuel. For some, that’s an accept-able trade to get 310R speeds and twin redundancy with a fueled cabin load capability of much more than 300 to 400 pounds.

Next is insurance. Jon Harden, president of Aviation Insurance Resources of Frederick, Md., pointed out that if you are just transitioning into twins, “it’s going to cost — if you can get coverage at all” — for the 310. “Underwriters are friendlier to the Aztec or Seneca,” he noted.

If you have the hours and the ratings, you can insure a $150,000 310R for around $3,700. “A high timer with more time in every category can expect closer to $3,300,” he added.

When it comes to maintenance, the 310R is the easi-est to care for of all 310s. Cessna changed the materials, and the exhaust in the 310R, which reduced corrosion problems, essentially leveling the playing field between the 310 and all other twins of the same era.

But what about that landing gear?“The 310 landing gear requires detailed knowl-

edge to keep it working correctly,” said Tony Saxton, a twin Cessna maintenance guru at TAS Aviation Inc. in Defiance, Ohio. “Rigging is crucial and is required every year or 200 hours and the Cessna maintenance manual must be followed religiously for this procedure. The vast majority of problems we see are caused by shops just doing the typical gear swing and lube during an annual — and that will eventually lead to big problems.”

In all but the earliest of models, parts availability seems to be decent simply because of the number of 310s Cessna built. Cessna also is reportedly good at providing those hard-to-find early model parts — but no one said they’d be cheap.

Owning a 310 also mandates belonging to owners groups for operational knowledge and assistance. The Cessna Pilots Association (Cessna.org) and The Twin Cessna Flyer (TwinCessna.org) are two must haves in your support kit.

I’ve owned two 310Rs and a 1957 310, which pro-duced mostly wonderful ownership experiences. Of the two dozen airplanes I’ve owned over the past 31 years, I’d love most to have that ‘57 310 back for one more round. But those earliest of 310s are now only viable for owners who have the skills, patience, and budget to treat them like vintage airplanes.

However, if your mission requirements justify a twin, or your discretionary budget allows it, then you’d be hard pressed to get more twin for the buck than the Cessna 310R. The systems are simple, you can work on them with basic tools, they are forgiving to fly, flexible to load, go like hell, and seem to just last and last.

In today’s buyer’s market, all this capability, speed, and beauty comes at prices never dreamed of even five years ago.

LOAD IT uP: The 310R has plenty of storage options including the nose, aft wing lockers, and rear main cabin.

Terrorists are not likely to be inter-ested in the small aircraft found at U.S. general aviation airports, most of which meet recommended security guidelines anyway, according to a report by the inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security.

found any evidence of a terrorist threat to GA facilities nor has there been a history of security breaches at them, the report continued, concluding that the IG found no need for increased regulation of the airports.

The DHS investigation was instigated by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas)who asked the IG to investigate after a Houston television station alleged “secu-rity breaches” occurred at three airports

when reporters were able to approach airfields or aircraft without identifying themselves.

“We reviewed the allegations and determined that they were not compel-ling,” wrote Homeland Security IG Richard Skinner. The TV reporters were unaware of security and monitoring measures the airports had taken, such as 24-hour video surveillance, locked or disabled planes, and controlled fuel access, he said.

GA poses little security threat, IG report finds

Desser: For all your tire needs

Desser has the solution to your Light Sport Aircraft and ultralight tire needs.

Best of all, you don’t have to settle for farm implement or wheelbarrow tires for your aircraft any longer.

We recently introduced two of the most common LSA tires: the 4.00-4 and 4.00-6 Aero Classic heavy duty aircraft type tires. Both feature higher load ratings, a speed index rating, and can be used as tube type or tubeless wheel applications. We also introduced a tough, flight training 5.00-5 4 ply tire for LSA applications.

At Desser Tire & Rubber Co. Inc., we manufacture and/or stock most LSA and ultralight tires, including 800x6, 4.00x8, 11/4.00-5, 13/5.00-6, 10/350-4, and most metric and tailwheel sizes.

We also distribute all brands of aircraft tubes, including Aero Classic, which fit most LSA size tires.

In addition to the LSA line of tires, we specialize in full FAA-TSO aircraft tires, from glider/sailplane, general aviation and airline sizes. We carry Goodyear, Michelin, Specialty Tires of America, and Aero Classic, along with all pneumatic tailwheels and tubes.

We are continually looking into the development of other aircraft tire sizes, so please check back with us for updated listings. Our latest tire will be a 21-inch tundra type tire for a 6-inch wheel. We will be introducing these in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Our large purchasing power enables us to provide manufacturers substantial savings on all of our products. Please email or call us directly for an OEM discounted quote for your tire needs.

Get your special pricing quote from us today. Use our LSA email: lightsport@desser.com or call us at 800-244-8473.

Cee Bailey’s: For all your windshield and window needs

Surprisingly in today’s fast paced world, there is still a company that refuses to sacrifice quality for speed and mass production.

That’s Cee Bailey’s Aircraft Plastics Inc. in Montebello, California, where precision handcrafting is still practiced daily.

The company’s windshields and windows are throwbacks to the past. You can find mass produced acrylics everywhere, but you won’t find our USA-produced handcrafted products sitting on a dusty shelf waiting for your order. We custom build your windshield to fit your aircraft’s serial number. The end result is a perfect, distortion-free windshield trimmed and ground to fit your aircraft, with little or no modification.

All windshields are still handmade, just as we did in 1955 when the company was founded. The company offers windshields and windows for more than 60 types of aircraft.

Cee Bailey’s also sells accessories, including aircraft shades, pitot tubes, safety flags, tire/wheel safety tote bags, cowl plugs, tie-downs, restorations kits and more.

All of our handcrafted windshields are unconditionally guaranteed to be the finest. Supplying unsurpassed optical qualities, contour, and fit in every product, all windshields and windows are FAA/PMA approved for your safety.

A full list of authorized Cee Bailey’s Aircraft Plastics dealers and installation

centers is online at www.ceebaileys.com. There also is detailed instructions on care and maintenance on the website so you can get the best out of your new windshield or windows.

The all new Remos GX

26 Light Sport Aircraft Special Advertising Section July 10, 2009

Remos: Best in class

One of the most successful manufacturers of the new class of Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) is Remos Aircraft.

The firm began in an old Bavarian farmhouse near Munich in the early 1990s with experimental ultralight aircraft.

From the beginning, the company planned to produce aircraft characterized by balanced flight characteristics combined with superior handling. All this was to be based on famed German craftsmanship, yielding high quality, top-of-the-line products.

The introduction of LSA in the United States, and certification of the Remos GX, have opened enormous opportunities in world markets. The GX is built on the basis of the successful G-3. It offers time-proven strengths like manufacturing quality, excellent performance, best of class in useful load, benign handling characteristics and technical innovations such as new carbon fiber wing and fuselage design, enhanced safety features, extended luggage space, ground-adjustable propeller and night VFR certified.

The Remos G-3 has been a success from the time it hit the market in 1998. That same year, a team piloting a G-3 won the German flying championships in the light aircraft class. In 2000, at the most important European general aviation show, the G-3 was

chosen “Aircraft of the Year.” The key material in the design of a top-class LSA is

carbon fiber. It weighs a third less than fiberglass with double the rigidity. However, the material costs eight times more than fiberglass.

Yet, achieving great structural strength and rigidity is not just a matter of the basic material, but also calls for top design and manufacturing know-how so that the material’s benefits really come to the fore. The structural integrity of the Remos carbon fiber cabin is several times better than a metal cabin.

The firm has a North American headquarters, regional offices and distributors in many areas.

Aircraft Spruce offers LSA products

Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co. has been a leading distributor of homebuilt and certified aircraft parts and materials since 1965. The company also is a distributor for Light Sport Aircraft products.

Products available include DVDs, books, avionics, and instruments, as well as the entire SkySports line, which Aircraft Spruce acquired in 2009. SkySports produces its own line of single and dual fuel systems and fuel probes, and also carries a complete line of products such as instruments, radios, GPS, strobes, Comtronics helmet/intercom systems, Winter instruments, and hardware for the ultralight market.

Aircraft Spruce provides an affordable

non-TSO’d “glass cockpit” option for retrofit installation in LSAs and experimental/kitbuilt aircraft with the Garmin GDU 370, a real breakthrough in panel-mount GPS navigation.

Purchase an EFIS, such as the Enigma, which is a comprehensive flight, engine and navigation instrument designed for Experimental and LSAs. The Enigma is a hardware and software concept that promotes a flexible, powerful EFIS platform together with a software application system that is highly user-modifiable.

Aircraft LED lights for the LSA market include the E-Series AveoFlashLP, which are unbreakable lights with a lifetime warranty at an affordable price for your kit, sport, ultralight or experimental aircraft. No more broken expensive lenses to replace and no more bulbs to replace.

Aircraft Spruce West is located in Corona, Calif., and Aircraft Spruce East is located in Peachtree City, Ga., allowing for efficient economical shipment of orders worldwide. Aircraft Spruce Canada is located in Brantford, Ontario.

The full Aircraft Spruce product line is presented in the company’s new 800-page 2008-2009 catalog, which is available free upon request.

Improve your oil’s performance with ASL CamGuard

While some aviation oils have additives, they often don’t address all four main concerns: corrosion prevention, wear, deposits and seals.

That’s why Greg Merrell, founder of Aircraft Specialties Services in Tulsa, Okla., decided to get into the additive business, teaming with petrochemist Edward Kollin to develop ASL CamGuard, an additive

designed to improve the performance of aviation oils greatly. Merrell knows that, for whatever reasons, pilots and mechanics have their favorite oils. ASL CamGuard improves the performance of all of them. Pilots don’t have to make a decision about changing a favorite brand of oil; they simply choose to make it better.

Let’s say you operate your plane on a frequent basis, perhaps several times a week. CamGuard is up to the job of reducing

wear and virtually eliminating

deposits that can lead to valve or piston ring sticking. Or perhaps you’re a sport flyer, and 40 to 50 hours a year is your average use. In that case corrosion is your worst enemy. Rust acts like sandpaper on engine parts and CamGuard has been proven to be a superior corrosion preventive. Idle engines also tend to get “sticky,” that is, piston rings stop moving and valves stick. CamGuard not only keeps things lubricated, it can free up sticky components and allow your oil to do what it is supposed to do.

Being knowledgeable is the key to understanding how ASL CamGuard improves the performance of your oil.

For the last few years extensive laboratory testing has been underway to develop the 11-ingredient formulation. Complete details of the testing procedures and results can be reviewed

at www.aslcamguard.com.CamGuard sells for

$24.95 per pint, which will suffice for an eight- to 12-quart engine oil capacity. If you change the oil every 25 hours, that’s about $1 per hour additional cost.

ASL CamGuard is accepted by the FAA for use in all certified, normally aspirated aircraft engines. The OK for use in turbocharged engines is pending.

For more information: 800-826-9252 or www.aslcamguard.com.

SkyCatcher prize in Sporty’s Sweepstakes

Sporty’s Pilot Shop will award a Cessna 162 SkyCatcher equipped with Garmin G300 avionics in its 2010 Sweepstakes.

Cessna is planning initial deliveries of the LSA this fall. In addition to the proprietary Garmin G300 avionics pack-age, thrust is provided by a composite propeller mated to a Continental O-200D engine developed specifically for the LSA market.

“We chose the SkyCatcher for our next Sweepstakes because it is the ulti-mate personal airplane,” said Sporty’s President Michael Wolf. “Plus, its glass panel avionics makes the airplane state of the art.”

Any order placed by May 10, 2010, will enter the customer in the Sweepstakes. The winner will be announced at Sporty’s annual Fly-In, scheduled for May 15, 2010.

Mountain High debuts LSA Portable Oxygen System

Mountain High Oxygen’s new technology for Light Sport Aircraft is the two-person MH EDS LSA O2D2 Pulse-Demand FADOC (Full Authority Digital Oxygen Control) Portable Oxygen Delivery System.

The MH EDS LSA O2D2 is the only single unit, portable, two-place, digital Pulse-Demand oxygen system available for LSA pilots.

Easy to use, the two-person LSA O2D2 reduces LSA oxygen system workload to nil. There are no oxygen flow indicators to watch or manual valves to adjust due to altitude changes. The LSA O2D2 automatically delivers the required oxygen pulses for changing altitudes for both the pilot and passenger.

The LSA O2D2 with the MH patented digital electronic “Pulse-Demand” FADOC oxygen delivery system was tested by the FAA Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI). The LSA O2D2 enables the pilot and passengers to fly at LSA pressure altitudes with absolute oxygen safety and comfort. Different from the “standard” constant flow systems, the LSA O2D2

Pulse-Demand system wastes no oxygen during the breathing cycle. The system operates for 50-plus hours on three AA alkaline batteries.

The portable LSA O2D2 system consists of an aluminum oxygen cylinder

(a choice of sizes), a carry case, seat back holding straps, regulator, service line, all fittings, the MH LSA EDS O2D2 FADOC unit, breathing cannulas, face masks, batteries and a tote bag — everything needed for a complete supplementary portable oxygen system.

The complete (including aluminum cylinder) portable two-place MH EDS LSA O2D2 Pulse Demand FADOC Oxygen Delivery System starts at $1,089.

A variety of options are available to meet specific pilot needs, including lightweight composite cylinders, Oxy-Arm boom cannulas and comfortable silicon facemasks with built in noise canceling ClearSpeak microphones.

U.S. Sport Aviation Expo: The LSA show of the year

Building on the success of the first five U.S. Sport Aviation Expos, the Expo Board is moving toward another great light sport aviation event Jan. 21-24, 2010, at Sebring Regional Airport, Sebring, Florida.

The Expo is the first and only event of its size focused on LSA and has grown substantially since its inception in 2004. In January 2009 more than 200 exhibit spaces were filled with aircraft and aviation-related items. Based on initial registrations, the event in 2010 will be larger and will include nearly every LSA available in the U.S. market and a significant number of ultralight aircraft, and include both U.S. and foreign-made entries. New registrations reflect that aircraft not at the Expo in prior years will be on display.

Bob Wood, chairman of the Expo, attributes this steady growth to the vibrancy of the LSA market, including new aircraft and engine designs and the demand for new, safe, simple aircraft to address the training and recreational marketplace. The entire package from aircraft, financing, insurance, training, maintenance and pilot certification will be represented at the Expo.

“We were fortunate to start our event in 2004, when the LSA rule was just being approved by the FAA,” he says, “and equally fortunate to draw in the best exhibitors. Every year we see more and more introductions of new planes, new models, new engines and new avionics here at Sebring.”

Sponsorship has grown, too, from what was initially a locally sponsored event to one brought to you in 2009 by Cessna, The Southern Ford Dealers, Gobosh Aviation, Remos Aircraft, Aircraft Spruce, Rotax and similar outstanding companies. Cessna has already signed on to be the 2010 name and title sponsor, and the Expo Board anticipates a growing number of other aviation businesses to sponsor in 2010 and beyond. The outstanding support of the Experimental Aircraft Association also has been instrumental in the success of the event, for in addition to incisive advice at the start, the organization’s officials have provided exceptional forums each year.

So when you are considering your calendar for 2010, mark in Jan. 21-24 as the time of the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo.

Niagara Air Parts: Everything you need to keep flying safely

If you’ve got questions about parts needed to get your airplane back into the air or to keep it flying reliably and safely, a good place to start getting the answers you need is Niagara Air Parts.

From the company’s extensive “in stock” inventory of parts in Niagara Falls, New York, ordered parts can be shipped anywhere in the world, usually on the same day the order is received.

Niagara Air Parts is a factory direct distributor in the United States for Canadian Aero Manufacturing, a Transport Canada-approved aircraft parts manufacturer and maintenance organization. Both companies are owned by Ronald Newburg, a Toronto native who has been flying since 1964.

After a successful career in insurance, Newburg founded Canadian Aero Engine & Accessories in 1987 to provide a source of quality engine overhauls and repairs. Through that business, he discovered a need for another company to manufacture parts, such as clutches, which were a continuing problem for his customers. The company has since branched out, receiving manufacturing approvals for the entire starter adapter and all

of its components. It also manufactures and supplies oil coolers, oil pumps and other parts. It also provides replacement window latches for 100, 200 and 300 series Cessna aircraft.

By opening Niagara Air Parts in New York, the Canadian businessman solved the problem of customs delays so his company could live up to its motto: Call Today, Fly Tomorrow.

Niagara Air Parts also provides the highest quality overhauls with the lowest possible price and excellent warranty.

For more information: 800-565-4268 or www.niagaraairparts.com.

Dan Johnson, a Light Sport Aircraft expert who writes the Splog column for General Aviation News, has launched PlaneFinder 2.0.

PlaneFinder 2.0 helps those inter-ested in LSAs determine which model is the best one for them. The free service uses 24 criteria to make these determina-tions, although it not necessary to reflect your preference in all 24 categories for the system to help, Johnson notes.

Since their arrival in 2004 (with first

approvals in 2005), almost 100 models of LSA have been brought to market from 70 manufacturers. Johnson, who has flight experience in about half the LSAs on the market, has evaluated all certified LSA.

“We kept PlaneFinder 2.0 lean and light, with quick-read questions and responses,” said Johnson.

PlaneFinder 2.0 is offered as a free service at ByDanJohnson.com, however registration is required. After leaving

your e-mail address, a temporary pass-word will be sent allowing full access to

LSAs weather economic woes a bit better than jet makers

Everyone is paying atten-tion to business these days. We read about banks, insurance companies, auto companies, and seemingly endless enterprises being “rescued” by the govern-ment, yet aviation seems to have deftly avoided being bailed out.

Of course, if you’re a jet seller, you certainly don’t feel subsidized by the U.S. Treasury. In fact, you probably feel attacked by elected officials who see business jets as little more than a perk for fat cat executives. As with most generalizations, this one is far from true; just ask the thousands of laid-off workers who once built, serviced, or flew these now-idled aircraft.

Sometimes, it seems good to be at the entry level, where costs are less. LSA producers who looked at the profit margins on jets once admired how lucrative that business appeared. Ironically, LSA manufacturers now may be in a more solid position.

While most of GA is down more than 50%, according to the latest GAMA figures, LSA producers are off only half that. Sales are certainly less than desired, but not as bad as sellers of higher-priced aircraft. Perhaps in response to the economic doldrums, flight schools continue to look at LSAs as a way to hold down their costs — acquisition and operation — while still offering something modern and appealing to new customers.

As we all look for better times ahead for the aviation industry, it is satisfying to see AOPA and EAA finally joining forces to bolster aviation. As I’ve seen in the LSA world, competing producers are willing to work together to grow aviation — consider the successful LSA Mall concept at air shows — so it’s great to see the big member organizations doing likewise. Here’s my public congratula-tions to AOPA President Craig Fuller and EAA President Tom Poberezny.

ABLE FLIGHT LSA TEAM CROSSES U.S. IN 17 HOURS

Cross this big country east to west in a day — in an LSA?

On June 8, pilots Matt Hansen and Jessica Scharle suc-cessfully completed a transcontinental flight in a Peregrine FA-04, dashing 1,813.5 nm from Florida to California. After making five stops, the duo touched down at Gillespie Field

near San Diego at 10:22 p.m., marking an elapsed time of 19 hours and 21 minutes, which includes time for fuel stops. Total flying time was just over 17 hours.

They may have accomplished the feat to help non-profit Able Flight in its mission to assist disabled folks learn to fly, but I think these 20-something pilots showed they have the right stuff. That’s even more obvious when you hear Scharle courageously overcame a rare medical condition that fused almost every joint in her body. Nearly immobi-lized at one time, numerous surgeries, years of physical therapy, and personal determination helped her become completely independent. After all that, a flight across America must have seemed a lighthearted jaunt.

Hansen, 23, is a flight instructor who trains people with disabilities to fly. Scharle is 24 and an Able Flight scholar-ship recipient who earned her Sport Pilot certificate last year at Hansen Air Group.

COMPUTERS IN THE COCKPITWho is the LSA avionics leader?Ever since steam gauges gave way to glass screens, the

players have changed. Analog instruments were made by many companies and became such commodities that you may not be able to name a brand. But as computers entered our cockpits, first via GPS and later with multi-function displays, brands became better known.

Among fully-built LSA, it appears Dynon has the lion’s share of the digital instrument market. Company officials admit their biggest competitor remains analog gauges, but in glass cockpits, the Washington State-based company appears to have the lead — estimated at 50-75%. Two top manufacturers, Flight Design and Remos, use only Dynon.

In the Experimental market, Dynon is the probable leader, although it has competitors, such as Grand Rapids Technology (GRT), Advanced Flight Systems (AFS), Blue Mountain, and MGL Avionics...each of which also has

installations in LSA. One educated guess is that Dynon has half the experimental digital market, while GRT and AFS have another sixth each, and Blue Mountain and MGL have something less than 10% each.

I acknowledge these guesstimates are non-scientific, so if you believe you have better information, please forward your comments to Dan@ByDanJohnson.com.

STRONG SURVIVE TOUGH ECONOMYWe continue to see the effects of the last year of eco-

nomic turmoil in LSA market shares. An updated ranking of market share shows the top 20

(of 70 total) producers still represent almost 90% of total LSA registrations. (For the record: Registrations on the FAA’s database are not the same as sales. Aircraft can be registered and not sold. Aircraft also can be identified as sold yet no longer registered, for example, if removed from service due to a non-repairable crash. To get some idea of the work my associate Jan Fridrich does to collect this information, look at the FAA’s database.)

Remos continues its solid 2008 performance. In the 16-month period since Jan. 1, 2008, the German brand is the leader with 73 units registered, followed by familiar names, in order: Flight Design 62; Tecnam 49; Czech Aircraft Works 44; Jabiru 32; American Legend 27; AMD 23; CubCrafters 22; Aeropro 14; plus Evektor and TL Ultralight at 12 each. These 11 brands registered 74% of all new LSAs.

These June 2007 accident reports are provided by the National Transportation Safety Board. Published as an educational tool, they are intended to help pilots learn from the misfortunes of others.

Aircraft: Piper Seminole. Location: Lumberton, N.J. Injuries: None. Aircraft damage: Substantial. What reportedly happened: A pilot

receiving instruction and a CFI were conducting a training flight. As the plane entered the traffic pattern, the instructor initiated engine failure by shutting off the fuel to the left engine. The approach was normal until touchdown, when the CFI advised the student to perform a go-around. The airplane began to drift left. The CFI took the controls, but was unable to maintain directional control. The plane went off the runway into rough terrain. The CFI reported he must have “forgotten to turn the fuel back on” during the go-around.

Probable cause: The CFI’s improper decision to simulate an engine failure in the traffic pattern by cutting off fuel to the engine, and his subsequent failure to maintain directional control during an aborted landing.

uuu

Aircraft: Cessna 172.

Location: Newcastle, Utah. Injuries: None. Aircraft damage: Substantial. What reportedly happened: The

student pilot, who was on a solo flight, landed on a dry lake bed he had landed on the day before with his instructor. The student attempted to take off utilizing a soft field technique in a gusty crosswind. He took off in a westerly direction with the wind from about 200° at 10 knots with gusts to 15 knots. The airplane lifted off and was in ground effect when a gust of wind pushed it to the right. He tried to abort the takeoff. The 172 touched down beyond the lake bed in a field of small dirt mounds and bushes. The main landing gear was damaged when the plane hit a dirt berm, causing the wings to hit the ground.

Probable cause: The pilot’s inad-equate compensation for the gusty and crosswind conditions, and his failure to maintain control of the airplane during takeoff.

  uuu

Aircraft: Beech E90. Location: Carlsbad, Calif. Injuries: 2 Fatal. Aircraft damage: Destroyed. What reportedly happened: The air-

port is on a plateau at an elevation of 331 feet MSL and there is a telephone line at

746 feet MSL about 2,500 feet from the departure end of the runway. According to the METAR issued 13 minutes before the accident, the winds were calm and visibility was a quarter of a mile in fog. The pilot had logged 1,177 hours, includ-ing 286 hours in the make and model of aircraft. He also had 268 hours in instru-ment conditions, including 11 hours in the 90 days before the accident.

Shortly after departure, the plane hit the telephone wires and burst into flames.

Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from wires during an instrument takeoff attempt.

uuu

Aircraft: Cessna 172. Location: Halls Crossing, Utah. Injuries: None. Aircraft damage: Substantial. What reportedly happened: The

pilot was attempting to land on a dirt road that is used as a backcountry strip. He had a tailwind, which caused the plane to land long and with too high an airspeed. The road curved and the pilot was not able to keep the airplane on the road. It encountered rough terrain and the nose wheel and left wing were bent by the impact.

Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to select suitable terrain for landing.

uuu

Aircraft: Cessna 152. Location: Miami, Fla. Injuries: None. Aircraft damage: Substantial. What reportedly happened: The

pilot told investigators that he had a headache and felt feverish while on final approach to land, then reported he lost consciousness, possibly due to dehydration and illness. He awakened when he landed hard, and then radioed for assistance.

Probable cause: The pilot’s loss of consciousness while on final approach to land, resulting in an uncontrolled descent, and a hard landing on the run-way.

uuu

Aircraft: Cessna 172. Location: Santa Barbara, Calif. Injuries: None. Aircraft damage: Substantial. What reportedly happened: The

pilot said the landing was normal, but during the rollout a gust of wind struck the airplane, and it veered off the run-way and hit a taxiway light. The nose and left landing gear collapsed, and the empennage sustained substantial damage.

Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control.

Exhibition pilot made a name for himself in race around Manhattan

William Luckey, a test pilot and exhibition aviator for the Curtiss Company, came to avia-tion late in life.

Best known as the winner of The New York Times race around Manhattan Island on Oct. 13, 1913, Luckey was nearing 50 when he took an interest in aviation in 1912.

Just a year later, he won the race around Manhattan Island, for which he received much publicity in aviation magazines and in newspapers coast to coast.

The New York Times sponsored the race around Manhattan as a part of the Aeronautical Society of New York’s memorial to Wilbur Wright’s first powered flight. The Times had taken a keen interest in aviation in the decade prior to World War I. Indeed, it probably published more news about aviation than any of its contemporaries.

The newspaper offered $2,250 in cash prizes: $1,000 to the winner; $750 for second place; and $500 for third place. For this, the Aeronautical Society called the race “The Times Aerial Derby.”

The 60-mile course was run counter-clockwise around Manhattan. Departure was from the Aeronautical Society’s field at Oakwood Heights on Staten Island. From there the course ran up the East River over the Harlem River to the Hudson and down the Hudson across the Bay to the starting point.

The Times announced that 16 airplanes were to participate in the race, but only five actually raced around the island. The starters were Luckey (Curtiss 100 hp), Charles Niles (Curtiss 100 hp), C. Murvin Wood (Moisant monoplane, 50 hp Gnome), J. Guy Gilpatric (Sloan Monoplane, 50 hp Gnome) and Tony Jannus (Benoist Tractor, 75 hp Roberts). The winds at the start were reported as 28 mph out of the northwest. The two monoplanes were blown wide of the course and the old passenger-carrying Benoist was no match for the Curtiss machines. Given the condi-tions, it is interesting to note that not one incident marred the race and all the engines performed well. Luckey found his intake pipes freezing but was able to knock off the ice and keep going.

Coming down the Hudson with the wind at his back, Luckey was able to attain a speed of 75 mph. He was declared the winner of the race with a time of 52 minutes, 54 seconds. Niles was second in his Curtiss and Wood third in his Moisant.

“I think it was one of the most remark-able races ever pulled off here in the East,

considering the course was almost entirely over water, while the fliers were exclusively land machines,” Luckey told the Times.

He noted that he suffered greatly from the cold weather: “My feet and legs were numb from the cold. I kept them clamped around the steering wheel.” He was dressed in his ordinary street clothes, with only a sweater thrown on at the last minute. He concluded, “I wouldn’t fly the race again tomorrow under similar conditions for $2,000.”

When Glenn Curtiss heard that Luckey won the race, he said that this was one of the surprises that aviation is continually springing. Curtiss reported that about a year ago Luckey appeared at the Curtiss camp in Hammondsport for training as an aviator. He was near the half century mark in years and had spent a long stretch of his life in New York manufacturing trunks for travelers, but had decided to take his turn at roaming through the skies.

“It was almost funny to think of this sedate-looking gentleman starting out to outdo Beachey and other youngsters,” Curtiss said. “His name proved to be a mis-nomer, however, during his early exhibitions, and hard luck followed him. He stuck to it, though, and his final mastery of the intrica-cies of aviation may be best testified to by those four hard fliers who with him fought their way around Manhattan skyscrapers in the teeth of a gale.”

After the victory in New York City, Luckey did some test flying at Hammondsport for Curtiss. There is a report of Luckey test-ing an automatic stability device that was mounted above the top wing of one of the Curtiss Hydroplanes.

During the summer of 1914 he also did some exhibition flying as a member of the Curtiss Exhibition Team. Luckey then went on his own, performing exhibition work at fairs in the East. He also did some dem-onstrations for the Pennsylvania National Guard in which he carried two guard officers aloft. He also was slated to fly the state’s governor on an exhibition flight, but his exhibition career ended with a fatal accident at the Sturgeon Falls Fair in Canada on Sept. 6, 1915.

It was reported that after a successful flight, he was about to land when the tail of his machine hit a railroad embankment, throwing him to the ground. He was rushed to a hospital in Montreal where it was deter-mined that he had a broken back. He died Dec. 20 of his injuries.

Though starting at an older age compared to most pilots of the era, Luckey, through his passion and skill, became one of the best and steadiest of the exhibition flyers. Luckey boasted of his record on one of his flyers, stating that he could fill more exhibition contracts at fairs, carnivals, celebrations, etc., “than any two aviators together in the United States and Canada.”

Dennis Parks is Curator Emeritus of Seattle’s Museum of Flight.
