Feature ID: BSS21454

Summary:

• This fully integrated feature enables the transport of Abis information using native IP over Packet Switched Networks (via Ethernet).

Benefits for the Operator:

• The operator is able to employ Packet Switched Networks in order to provide the transport backhaul for the Abis traffic, offering significant OPEX savings due to the more cost effective physical media (Ethernet) and the simplified operation and maintenance of the network that can then be derived.

• In addition to the physical media benefit, Packet Abis also offers significant bandwidth savings in comparison with traditional TDM- or PWE-based packet transport since it introduces a very efficient and fully integrated Abis Optimization capability.

• The integrated Abis Optimization also facilitates the introduction of high bandwidth features such as EDGE Evolution and OSC without necessarily increasing the backhaul bandwidth capacity requirement. Bandwidth can be shared by CS, PS and Signalling traffic. There are no predefined limitations except the total available bandwidth provided by the physical link.

Functional Description:

• The Packet Abis solution removes the traditional TDM Abis structure, where the static relationship between the Air and the Abis Interfaces is eliminated. Further, Abis Optimization through the removal of silence and idle frames, multiplexing and bandwidth sharing for the CS-Userplane; PS-Userplane; Control-Plane and Management-Plane achieves significant bandwidth savings. If no data needs to be sent then no capacity is occupied/utilised.

• The Packet Abis U-Plane is transported over UDP/IP and the C-Plane/M-Plane is transported over SCTP/IP.

• The physical interface supported is Ethernet.

CS U-plane

In CS traffic in the downlink direction, the ETPE receives:

Ater/TRAU frames from the GSWB (in case the TC is in the BSS) and do conversion of Ater/TRAU frames (coming from GSWB) to the RTP packets and removes silent frames or

RTP packets from ETPA (in case the TC isin MGW) for the respective CS call and multiplexes the RTP packets to the Packet Abis packets and sends the Packet Abis packets to the BTS sites using the Ethernet medium.

For uplink CS traffic, the ETPE receives:

Packet Abis packets from the BTS sites via the ethernet medium. If required, it demultiplexes the packets.

In case if the TC is located in the BSS, the ETPE converts the RTP packets to the Ater/TRAU frames and forwards them to the GSWB. It adds buffer delay in order to ensure that variation in packet arrival time (jitter) does not ause missing frames on the Ater interface.

In case if the TC is located in the MGW, the ETPE forwards the RTP packets to the respective ETPA which further sends them to MGW.

PS U-plane

In case of downlink PS traffic, the ETPE has function:

Receives a Packet Abis PCU frame from PCU2-D or PCU2-E within a HDLC data frame or within a UDP/IP packet.

Updates its lookup tables based on the addressing information that is received along the Packet Abis PCU frame.

If there is any old association, it gets overwritten.

Constructs a PS U-plane IP packet for the downlink transmission and sends the constructed IP packet to the appropriate BCF via the Ethernet medium.

For the uplink PS traffic, the ETPE has function:

Receive a PS U-plane IP packet from the BCF via the Ethernet medium.

Extracts the RTP payload (the Packet Abis PCU frame) from the received IP packet.

By using the lookup tables, retrieves the PEP ID association for the frame.

Finally, it sends the received Packet Abis PCU Frame to PCU2-D/E with the necessary address information via the appropriate HDLC link or the Ethernet link.

C-plane and M-plane

Telecom signaling messages belong to the C-plane.

Each active ETP has a C-plane connection to each BCSU.

O&M signaling belongs to M-plane.

One BCSU acts as a gateway for M-plane.

Each active ETP has a connection to the M-plane end point; OMU, MCMU and BCSU via the gateway BCSU.

Abis C-plane and M-plane have been mixed up with the BSC internal signalling channels..
