After the establishment of Jamestown colony, thousands of immigrants made their way to English America, establishing the original 13 colonies.

The English colonies were separate communities scattered along the Atlantic coast from New England to Georgia. Few people in the Carolinas ever saw or spoke with a person from Massachusetts or New York or Pennsylvania.

People did not often use the word “American” to describe themselves or their country. Most thought of themselves as English or Dutch or French--whatever their homeland was. Eventually, the land would change these Europeans into resourceful Americans.

Although there were no formal ties between colonies, geographic and cultural factors drew the colonies together in groups.
