Our Planet is Our Home

Our world is a nice place and it is worth fighting for.

Ernest Hemingway

Motto:If you don’t think of the future – you will have nothing.

What is this life, if full of careWe have no time to strand and stareNo time to see when woods we pass

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see in broad daylightStreams full of stars like skies at night.

A poor life this is, full of care,We have no time to stand and stare.

Land pollution When you throw something away, it goes in a garbage can. Once a week a garbage truck comes and the can is emptied, and that’s the last you see of it. But it’s not disappear. It is taken to a garbage dump. Most of our garbage is just buried. Now we are making so much garbage that in many places there is not enough room to bury it all. So, we have to act fast to reduce the amount of garbage, recycle and reject it. We will produce less garbage and help keep our planet green.

Air Pollution Until about 150 years ago the air was clean and perfect for the people and animals to breathe. Then people started building factories. Those factories and many of the things they made like cars put a lot of harmful gases in the air. Then people started driving cars which added more pollution to the air.Today the air is so polluted that it is not always safe to breathe. Many cities around the world have air filled with a pollution called “smog”. This is strong in more places that the air that should be blue actually looks brown. Polluted air is not only bad for people and animals, but for trees and other plants as well. And some places it is even damaging farmer’s crops the food we eat.So it is very important for us to clean up the air we all breathe it.The biggest polluter today is the car. Exhaust fumes are the main cause of poor air quality. This problem is especially bad in cities, where the number of cars is increasing every year. The byproducts of their activity pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we grow grain and vegetables. Every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons of dust and other harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Vast forests are cut and burnt in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, a number of rivers and lakes dry up.

Climate change Climate change is one of the biggest problems facing the world today. Many scientists believe the changes we have seen over the last century are mainly due to man’s activities. The earth is kept warm by greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide which have increased temperatures further. Climate changes is also making conditions difficult for some animals. In the Arctic, the ice is melting threatening the survival of animals such as polar bears.

The Greenhouse Effect

Pollution from cars, factories and power station is causing harmful greenhouse gases to build up in the Earth’s atmosphere. These gases prevent heat from escaping and as a result our planet is getting warmer.Global warming is causing the ice at the North and South Poles to melt and sea levels and temperatures to rise, leading to serious flooding and violent storms in many parts of the world. In other places, there will be less rain and the land will be turned into desert.

Water Pollution The Planet Earth is mostly water. Oceans cover the biggest part of it – and there are lakes, rivers, streams – and even water underground. All life on the Earth from the smallest bug to the biggest whale – depends on the water. It’s precious. But we are not doing a very good job of keeping water clean. In many places the water has become polluted. Rivers and lakes are polluted by garbage or by poisonous chemicals which are dumped right into them. Underground water can be polluted by gasoline or by harmful liquids that seep into the ground. Some fertilizers and pesticides used in farming leak down through the dirt too. We need to save our water, to keep it clean and healthy so that people, plants and animals may always have something to drink.

LitterAnother problem of big cities is wastes. The wastes from plants and factories contaminate water and soil. It has become dangerous to drink unboiled water or eat vegetables and fruit. It is very important that every person should be responsible for ecologically clean world and act correspondently . What all people need is a healthy environment.

Litter is a problem in our

cities Litter is garbage – like food, paper, and cans – on the ground or in the street. Where many people live together, litter is a problem. People don’t always put their garbage in the garbage can. It’s easier to drop a paper than to find a garbage for it. But litter is ugly. It makes the city look dirty, and it spoils the view. The wind blows papers far away. Often they are difficult to catch. When they blow against a fence, they stay here. This fence is a wall of garbage. Litter is a health problem, too. Food and garbage bring animals, which sometimes carry disease. Some people want to control litter. They never throw litter themselves, and sometimes they work together in groups to clean up the city. In most places litter is against the law. The law punishes people who throw garbage on the streets . They usually pay a fine and occasionally they go to jail. Two famous sayings in the United States are “Don’t be a litterbug!” and “Every litter bit hurts!”

Energy Energy… Everything in our life is connected with it. It is constantly going with us during all our life. All the processes in natural and dead world are connected with it. The greatest and the smallest things in the Universe happen due to energy.

The most important sources of energy are: oil, natural gas and coal. Nowadays the great part of energy belongs to atom energy or nuclear energy. But it is very dangerous. We all remember the Chernobyl catastrophe in 1986. That’s why nowadays there are untraditional sources of energy. They are used with the help of sun and wind. But everybody should use the energy economically. To use the energy economically means to use it with mini-results. That’s why don’t forget to switch off the electric and gas machines, to warm up the windows and to shut the door tightly. So, don’t forget to switch off light bulbs when you are not in the room and computers, TV’s and stereos when you leave them overnight. So, you can save a lot of energy!

About 2,5 billion people can not get any form of modern energy, but rely on burning woos, crop wastes and animal dung for heat and cooking. This is another biggest killer of the environment. The smoke from their fires contains a great number of poisonous chemicals, which swirls around their homes killing more than two million people a year – half of them are children under five. Taking the wood and wastes from the land reduces its fertility and increases erosion, but the practice is steadily increasing has no other option. In rural India, for example, only a third of all households have access to electricity. The rest depend chiefly on wood, but deforestation and development are rapidly depleting supplies. Meanwhile, 80% of all the energy used comes from oil, gas and coal. This emits pollution that causes lung disease and acid rain and it is the force behind global warming. The world’s energy consumption is expected to double by 2035 avid treble by 2055.

Saving is the first step towards sustainable development

Conserve natural resources at home

Energy is Life.

Save energy!

Nowadays saving is very important for keeping ecologically clean environment, for preserving climate on the Planet Earth Let’s take part in this important action. Because even a little effort of everybody can save the environment, the Earth and all of us.

For saving thePlanet.

Steps

Walk short distances ride a

bicycle or use public transport if it is available.

Save energy. Switch off light bulbs when you are not in the room; and computers, TVs and stereos when you leave them overnight.

Don’t leave the tap running when you brush your teeth. Take showers not bath.

Avoid product that are dangerous to the ozone layer.

Buy recycled paper. Recycle newspapers, cans, jars and plastics.

Set up a “green group” to monitor approach to waste and recycling.

Plant a tree in your garden.
