Welcome
Kevin M. BurkePresident & CEOACI-NA
Having joined ACI-NA in January, this will be my first annual conference experience and I truly look forward to connecting with our member airports’ leadership and industry innovators during these next several days. North America is home to the finest commercial aviation system, and our airports connect us global economic opportunity across the U.S. and Canada. The conversations and ideas shared during these next few days will lay the groundwork for a busy 2015 in both countries, a year that very likely will be a watershed for the direction of our industry.
For those of you who have attended our past annual conferences, this year’s edition also is a fresh start. The ACI-NA staff has listened to your feedback from past years and we’ve reimagined how we present our educational content by paying closer attention to how our attendees spend their time away from the office. You’ll notice that each day has a specific content focus, and that the conference wraps up midday on Wednesday, September 10, which will allow you to get back to the office sooner and make headway on the valuable connections you will have made in our classrooms, exhibition hall, and networking events.
Finally, I’d like to extend my warmest thanks to our fantastic host airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, who have partnered with ACI-NA to bring you our best conference experience yet. We’ve got a fast-paced next few days ahead of us, and there’s no better backdrop than the home of the world’s busiest airport.
Best regards,
Dear Conference Attendees and Exhibitors,
On behalf of the ACI-NA team in Washington, D.C. and Ottawa, welcome to Atlanta and the 2014 ACI-NA Annual Conference and Exhibition!

4 ACI-NA Conference & Exhibition
Welcome
Mark M. ReisChairmanACI-NA 2014 Board of Directors
Managing DirectorSeattle-Tacoma International Airport
2014 has been a year of change for ACI-NA and an opportunity to refocus how we best respond to and represent your interests, concerns, and challenges in Washington, D.C., and Ottawa. To carry on that effort, this year’s Annual Conference and Exhibition builds on its reputation as our industry’s premier event with more focused educational content and more targeted opportunities for you to network with colleagues and vendors.
Prior to your arrival in Atlanta you’ll have noticed some important and exciting changes to the conference, most notably a refreshed agenda to drive our conversations this week. Our new schedule keeps all our high-quality education and networking sessions, but it’s organized to better maximize your time out of the office. By the end of the week, many of you will already be putting into practice the knowledge and connections gained here.
Similarly, ACI-NA has broadened the scope of topics the conference will explore. We’ve put together a compelling lineup of sessions covering a wide range of topics currently experienced by U.S. and Canadian airports, from master planning efforts to advocacy coalition-building to the rapid rise of ride-booking smartphone apps. Meanwhile, the exhibition hall will showcase the latest products and solutions to improve the airport experience and will be the heart of the conference’s social scene. Whether you’re here to connect directly with vendors or airport decision-makers, or you’re simply curious about the newest innovations, the exhibition floor will be the center of our industry during these next few days.
ACI-NA has had an exceptional partner in producing the 2014 Annual Conference and Exhibition in our host airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and I hope you will be able to join us Tuesday night at the brand-new NCAA College Football Hall of Fame for our closing night event. The evening will be both a salute to our dynamic host city and offer a preview of our 2015 conference next October in Long Beach, CA.
Again, welcome to Atlanta!
Dear Industry Colleagues,
On behalf of the ACI-NA Board of Directors and all of our member airports and associates, welcome to Atlanta and the 2014 ACI-NA Annual Conference and Exhibition.

This year’s conference promises something for everyone, with discussions and presentations spanning topics that include operational issues, air service development and capital improvement.
You will also have several opportunities to enjoy our wonderful city, and we have planned a special VIP tour of Hartsfield-Jackson that will serve as a memorable conclusion to your visit. I look forward to meeting many of you throughout the week. I wish you all an enlightening and productive conference experience. Once again, welcome and enjoy your stay in Atlanta!
Sincerely,
Greetings ACI-NA Colleagues!
On behalf of the Hartsfield-Jackson team, I’m pleased to welcome you to the ACI-NA Annual Conference & Exhibition.
Kasim ReedMayorCity of Atlanta
The 2014 ACI-NA Annual Conference brings together nearly 1,700 delegates from more than 200 airport and airport authorities to participate in workshops, information sessions, and networking events. ACI-NA has an exemplary record of representing local, regional and state governing bodies and approximately 380 aviation-related businesses in the U.S. and Canada. I salute this organization for convening such an impressive group of industry leaders and aviation experts.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is proud to host this anticipated annual event. As the world's busiest airport, we welcome more than 94 million passengers every year and ATL serves as metropolitan Atlanta's front door. It is my hope that this conference creates many more opportunities for business and airport authorities to share best business practices, open new routes, and grow passenger and cargo traffic in North America.
On behalf of the City of Atlanta, I extend best wishes for an auspicious event.
Sincerely,
Greetings,
As Mayor of the City of Atlanta, I am pleased to welcome attendees of the 2014 Airports Council International - North America Annual Conference and Exhibition hosted by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Airports connect us to more than our destination. Airports connect us to the economic engine that grows local communities and businesses, empowers workers and travelers, and strengthens our national economic health.
If we want airports to keep us connected to the economic opportunity they provide, it’s time to drive more local investment by modernizing the way we finance airports.

¢ Airport Tour
Cap off your visit to ATL with a tour of the centralized and mobile command and control center, the nerve center of the “ATL SkyTrain”, and the airfield at the world’s busiest airport!
Your tour will include a stop at Hartsfield-Jackson’s innovative Centralized Command and Control Center (C4). You will see how the C4 facility effectively integrates the Airport Operations Center and Emergency Operations Center under one roof. Further, get a behind-the-scenes tour
of the ATL Sky Train’s operation center. The ATL SkyTrain is an elevated train that connects the passenger terminal to the rental car center. As part of the tour, you will see how the ATL staff operates and maintains the Sky Train’s 12 cars to provide reliable service 24 hours a day.
View one of the nation’s first end-around taxiways – a major component in ATL’s airfield efficiency. Learn more about the taxiway and runway widening completed to accommodate the A380 –
the world’s largest passenger aircraft that began daily operations in Atlanta last year. See firsthand how ATL manages its more than 2,500 daily flight operations.

4A. How Worried Should You Be About the Pilot Shortage?Room A402/403
Talent recruitment is an emerging challenge for many industries, but none threatens to leave passengers grounded like the looming pilot shortage. Over the next two decades, Boeing estimates it will take more than half a million new pilots, including more than 88,000 in North America alone, to meet new air service demands. However, in the United States, stricter flight and rest rules, combined with the requirement for first officers to hold an Air Transport Pilot certificate, have led to pilot shortages and the cancellation of flights. For Canadians, substantial retirement, competition from the Air Force and foreign airlines, and low salaries has contributed to a general fading of the romance of the skies. This session will explore the possible solutions to one of aviation’s most pressing talent issues and the ways airports can prepare.

In order to keep pace and overcome the challenges presented by a highly-connected traveling public, airports all around the world have increasingly stepped up efforts to improve their customers’ experience. But addressing the needs of highly-connected domestic and global travelers to offer a seamless customer experience is very complex. This session will explore the emerging international trends in ensuring a positive customer experience in a modern “high tech, high touch” world. Sustainability efforts are about more than making an airport more environmentally friendly. Rather, they have made the point that these initiatives can improve competitiveness, reduce long-term costs effectiveness, enhance resource utilization, and improve relationships with key community stakeholders. Early-implementing airports have found sustainability programs to be as much a business imperative as an environmental initiative. In this session, some of these early implementers will be on hand to discuss how they got their sustainability programs up and running as well as the benefits and issues they’ve encountered as these programs have matured.

6A. Edge4Vets at Airports: How to Accelerate Talented, Job-Ready Veterans into Your Airport's Workforce
Exhibit Hall A1 Classroom A Edge4Vets, a program offered by the Human Resiliency Institute at Fordham University in New York, is helping U.S. Armed Forces veterans in teaching them how to translate their leadership strengths, including strong core values and skills, into “tools” for the civilian workplace. This past year, Edge4Vets received a grant from the WalMart Foundation to develop a new program called Edge4Vets at Airports to adapt the current model in preparing veterans for jobs in
the aviation sector, specifically at airports, including jobs with an airport authority or similar governmental entity, air carriers, and airport-service related companies.
This session will specifically look at the two pilot programs being conducted with airports in New York and Florida. Tom Murphy will present his report on the progress of those programs to date and how this model might be expanded in the future for use by other airports across the country. This directly supports the ACI-NA HR Committee’s stated mission to prepare for the airport workforce of the future by helping airport stakeholders integrate veterans into their employee ranks.
