District Discussion
Cover crops! Have you heard of them? They’re kind of a big deal. South McLean SCD needs your help. We are
seeking several co-operators to participate in cover crop demonstration plots for the 2019 season and in future
seasons! The reasons and types of cover crops are as varied as the producers who plant them. The one constant reason
for using cover crops is soil health. The science is in! A growing plant is beneficial for building soil. The benefits
include: increases in water holding capacity, water infiltration, and soil organic matter, just to name a few. Let’s not overlook the benefit to soil biota. There are more organisms in a double
handful of healthy topsoil than the human population of planet Earth! Think about that. Isn’t it a good idea to keep
your soil healthy? Please contact the office for details if you are interested in participating.

2018 South McLean County Achievement Award Winner Presentation
The Steve and Katie Heger Farm of Underwood, North Dakota has been selected as the 2018 Conservation Farm Achievement winner for the South McLean County Soil Conservation District. The Heger family started farming in 1919 with
Maurice and Ione Heger. Steve and Katie took over in 1991 as the 3rd generation of Heger’s to farm and are looking forward to being North Dakota Centennial farmers next year. The Heger’s conservation farming operation produces cash
crops by utilizing a conservation cropping system, no-till seeding, residue management, nutrient management, split fertilizer applications, integrated pest management and cover crops. These practices contribute to the farm’s overall soil health
and productivity. Heger’s USDA conservation program efforts include enrollment in the Continuous Conservation Reserve Program (CCRP), Conservation Security Program (CSP), The Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) and the Conservation Stewardship Program. The South McLean County Soil Conservation District is proud to announce the Steve and Katie Heger
farm as their 2018 Conservation Achievement Farm and Ranch winner.
Mylo Hatzenbuhler
(Clyde Bauman)
This is the story of Mylo Hatzenbuhler, the humble farm boy who has become
known as the "Strasburg Superstar" to his followers, a fourth-generation
fictional farm boy who lives with his fictional wife, Emma, and family on a
fictional farm "eight miles east of Strasburg and a half," as Mylo puts it.
Mylo was the star of the show at the 2018 SCD banquet!
With the growing season over and winter on the horizon, now is the time to make final decisions for that tree planting you have been contemplating. A
fall burndown on the site should have set it up nicely for good root kill. Spot application may be all that is necessary if green growth is present in
spring. That should be enough to prepare the site for a successful no-till planting. If you are tilling the site, a first pass should have been made before
freeze up. Sites currently in sod will obviously require more preparation than a field site which
has been farmed for the last 100 years.
P l a n n i n g t r e e p l a n t i n g s
Before you do anything regarding a new tree planting, call or stop in to the office. We can discuss the goals you have for your planting and help determine the best species based on your unique tree site. Sites
can still be measured, if the snow does not get too deep. Soil types are determined with our present technology and field analysis is not needed. It’s all online. These are all part of planning.
In this newsletter, you will find a hand plant order form. If you need to replace trees in a recent planting, or you are planning a small row for wildlife or other purposes, look through the list and decide how many of each species you will require. Read the ordering instructions carefully as there are two prices listed.
Trees come in bundles of twenty-five (25) and that reflects the bundle price. If you only need an amount less than the bundle size, there is a price listed for individual
trees. You save ten dollars ($10) by purchasing a bundle.
Hand plants are the same age as the trees the district plants with the tree crew. These are called conservation grade trees, or CG for short.
Also available, but for a higher price, are larger trees. Taller, older trees are available in only selected species. These are generally two (2) to five (5) feet tall, species dependent. If you are filling in open spots in an older shelterbelt or wish to plant a tree in your yard for future shade, these are
good choices. Please check the correct column when placing your order for these trees.

SCD
Greetings,
I’d like to introduce myself to the South McLean County Soil Conservation District community. My name is Derek Klostermeier, and I’m the new Watershed Coordinator working in Turtle Lake. I’m glad to join the staff and community as a member of the District and look forward to working with all toward the goals and objectives of the District.
Prior to joining, I have lived and worked in Bismarck as an Environmental Consultant, working throughout the Northern Great Plains with various clients and projects related to grassland/rangeland, wetlands, reclamation, and various wildlife studies. I received my BS Biology at Bemidji State University, Bemidji, MN; and MS Natural Resources Management from North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND, where my thesis evaluated: “Comparing Ecological Site Description to Selected Habitat Characteristics of Plains Sharp-tailed Grouse on the Grand River National Grassland in Northwest South Dakota.” I look forward to working with producers and others within the watershed district and build relationships to address the needs and objectives and many different resource concerns within the watershed district.
New kid on the block!
